I have been working on getting the maverick ready for the track for a couple weeks on and off. I got some et street radials, installed a tach and so on. Well today was the day of reckoning, we trailer it to the track. I go to make the 1st pass and its at 160 or so degrees. pull in the box and do a nice 1-2-3 burnout. I pull into the beams against a 03 cobra. The lights come down and I go. The car transfers nice and I see a 1.89 60ft and the car goes down the track without missing and so on. I get my et slip and was crushed, turns out the car launches good but has no power, the et was 8.60 at 79mph. After that the car went a bunch of 8.70's. All in all I have decided for now that its a nice street car and definitely not a race car. Owe well I was really happy for a minute lol

    I feel your pain, that's slow for a 351...

The std bore 5.0 in my 3750 LB T-Bird would run 8.40s@82mph on drag radials and I drove it to and from the track, don't own a trailer... Currently she's down with a blown head gasket...

I know, for the 1st time out I figured 8.30's at 84 or so

Just means you have some tuning to do, don't let it discourage you.

I didn't build it but this is what I was told
351w stock crank and rods with flat tops
le mans cam, basically a low lift high duration 40 year old design lol
    68 302 heads, supposedly ported with 1.94 1.50 valves
air gap intake and a 650 demon, I tried my spare 650 holley dp and it made no difference
    c4 3500 stall, 4.11 gears and 255/60 et streets

lol, I was launching anywhere from 1500-2400 rpm trying to find a sweet spot. I shifted anywhere from 5k to 5600 rpm. around 5300 seems tp work best

You need a good set of heads and better cam... I have Trick Flow heads and cam in the Bird with only a 2600 stall & 3.73 cogs, will pull hard to 6K plus... I dunno what cam to recommend as I don't think TF sells a flat tappet that's matched to their heads...

The older cams were designed to work within the limitations of the factory heads. Either the camshaft is a mild grind or the ignition/ fuel curves need tweaking. Not knowing the cam specs the combo sounds good tho.

That should be good to 6300-6500, Keep tuning it. Cam timing may be advanced too much.
