I am toying with putting 205/75/15 (27" tall) mounted on a Cragar 15x6 (~3 3/8" backspacing). Has anyone ran this tire before. I feel it will be a very good match for 275/60/15 rears, and give it a nice "old" drag stance. If the 205/75s are reported to have interference issues, I will go for the 205/70/15s which are about 26 1/4" tall. If anyone has any experience with the 205/75/15 mounted on the front, please let me know.
I ran those on my 70 mav and they rubbed at full steering stop on the fender brace rod. But it wasn't bad and I got used to when to quit turning the wheel. Only happened in parking lots.
So, to really be sure we will have zero problems, the 205/70/15 are the likely better choice. The diameter is still pretty filling in the wheel well, approx 26.25". I would hate to realize after purchasing the larger tires that my wheel placements was actually worse than yours, and rubs and then we are stuck with worthless purchase. I have had my fill with skinnies on the street, in the late 70's and 80's. I think the tires like the 15" 205's in narrower section widths give similar effect with completely safe road worthiness.
If you are buying them from a local dealer ask them if they will mount one so you can test fit it. If they want your money they should do it for you.
Last Friday we went ahead and played it safe with the 205/70/15 size. Our rear set-up is not going to permit a 275/60/15, so I did not want to end up with a taller front than rear anyway, so I did not even try the 205/75's. Our tire size fitment on our maverick is ending up as a 15x6 with 3.5 BS and 205/70/15 on the front, with rears at 15x8 with 3.25 BS and 245/60/15's. We rolled the rear fenders and the 245's fit fine. the wheels are 15x8 Cragar SST's, but I have installed a 1" bolt on spacer with proper bores for a good fit on the axle hub. I am thinking 255's will work too, but the 275's are a no go with our rim placement, without jacking the car up. I dont want to that. It sits nice now. The 205/70's/15 filled out the front fenders nicely and gave a good narrow drag look, while maintaining more than adequate structural capability.
