I have put this off long enough, truth is, its just not safe to drive any longer. I replaced the right front soft line about 6 or 7 years ago without trouble. The line on the left side wouldnt let go and it was wanting to twist the hard line, so I gave up. I have sprayed the left and the rear lines with PB Blaster and also wrapped them in a small rag soaked in blaster. My fear is a result the same as before. Im ok replacing the hard line on the left front if I need to, but the rear is a different story. Im afraid of the line breaking off in the piece it goes into on top of the rearend. Am also afraid of damaging the hard line, its a long one. Does anyone have any tips or advice? Thank ya
Use a very good name brand line wrench. Craftsman is not a good enough name brand anymore, it will spread open and round off the fitting. I have Mac line wrenches...Good luck
Vice grips will also work in a pinch as well. Sometimes I tighten them first, then loosen. This helps to break it loose.
I agree with Craig, vice grips and tighten, then loosen, then tighten again, then loosen, repeat until it comes off....
Put some heat to it with a torch. Or spray some cheap engine degreaser on it (The cheap stuff makes a good penetrating oil)
Thanks for the tips guys. Am gonna squirt it a couple more times and give it a shot tomorrow afternnon.
I managed to get the left front done this afternoon. I didnt have any trouble breaking either end loose. The problem was the nut on the steel line would not let go and turn freely. Thats what caused me to bail on this years ago. I really thought 24+ hours soaking with blaster would have done the trick. I ended up cutting the soft line and spinning it off the steel line and the wheel cylinder. To reinstall, I spun the new soft line onto the steel line. Then I removed the wheel cylinder, pulled the soft line thru the backing plate and spun the wheel cylinder onto the soft line. Its all back together and bled out. I cannot use that crazy method on the rear so the dang blasted steel line better let go of the nut! I forgot to use the torch today, you can bet I wont forget tomorrow.
Mission accomplished! Just finished up the rear line. Everything came loose just fine on rearend side. The end attached to the steel line going to the front of the car was a bear. PB Blaster didnt seem to do anything after soaking in a rag for days. It was heat that saved the day. The nut at the end of the steel line never did break free, but I was able to spin the line off like I did on the front. Thanks for all the tips guys :Handshake
Glad you got it done...For future reference: Once you have the component removed...Get the fitting cherry red with the torch and quench it with water. Do this a few times and the nut wil spin loose with a wrench on it and your good to go for re-assemby...
A mini-torch provided enough heat to get the tube nuts loose from the hard line on mine. Not red hot but it was enough.
