I figured if I am going to keep the nitrous and the HEI distributor, I need to lose that huge K&N filter and 13" pan, and do a cold air tube from behind the headlight.

Has anyone used any kits and how do they fit and function?

Pics would be appreciated if you have any, or links to pictures.

Yes, I agree that they are usually ugly ricer setups, but it looks like the route I am going to have to go.

Hardest part is finding a carb hat that will fit between the nitrous plate/carb and hood.

That is another option. Back to stock hood, cut a hole in it, and add a mild scoop. Put some actual meaning to my name.

Well, found this. Good for 450 hp so it shouldn't restrict my air flow.

2.4" tall, so it should work.

    Right at $100

wow.. that's pretty nice for a hundred bucks! got a link for that one?

The worst that I can see from the pic.. is that it looks like you'll need a smaller diameter AND shorter height filter.. which will hurt airflow potential slightly.

If you did decide to go with that one.. I'd be stuffing if with the highest flowing filter you can find to fit it. Which may be found here.

Pricy?.. yes.. but max power and efficiency always is.

errr.. wait.. on the relook.. that won't even take a filter anyways! lol it will use a remote filter instead.

i would use that hat and make up some piping to reach where the battery was. the core support has the 3 big slots for fresh air. i would locate the biggest best flowing filter you can get/afford and mount it where the battery would go. move battery to the trunk if you havent already. i would then built a box around the area to only allow cold air from the the 3 slots to reach the air filter. i would even cut the area out around the slots to create as big of an inlet hole as possible. to go a step further you can seal the radiator support area off on the sides top and bottom. this would really create a ram air effect on the air filter and radiator.

    Just convert it to EFI...:hide:

I did, however, find the shortcoming in using ram air in that location for a daily driver, if you go through a significant puddle of water, the water deflects up and over the front of the hood on that side, soaking the air filter and potentially ingesting water. I just avoid puddles...

Funny, I have a cold air intake in that spot and I drive through tons of puddles, haven't soaked my filter yet that I'm aware of.

That comment was more questionable humor than a reason to not do it. :D
For what it's worth, There is one in my neighborhood that the storm drain tends to clog in heavy rain storms, that for some reason sends water spewing over the front of the Maverick and my Toyota. I just avoid it when I can and I have 1/2" drains in the box since it actually bolts into the factory battery tray nutserts

That is Specter part number 98499 and it appears that you can get it that price through Autozone, ebay, and summit racing.

Yes, to the old battery location, but I wasn't planning on doing a box. No reason I couldn't though, and if I am going through all this trouble, I may as well.

I don't drive in the rain, so that isn't an issue at this time. Seals are bad, and half the car is primer.

Thanks for all the feedback! Helps alot!

OK, just ordered the hat and low profile nut, but this will be a MUCH easier project than the MII swap!

Luckily, I can buy all the other parts locally one piece at a time until I get it all finished.
