...and I use the term "problem" loosely lol I have had some great cars in my day... Camaros, Mustangs, a '72 Chevelle SS, a Duster, a couple of El Caminos.... but never - NEVER - has any one of them garnered the attention of the Maverick. We live in Fredericksburg, Texas, and it seems as if there is a classic restored ride on every corner... so the attention has caught me off-guard. Every trip to the store/gas station/whatever nets at least one person excitedly talking about how awesome the car is. And they're doing it with a lot of emotion. Even when we pull up to a car worth a lot more money (recent visits with a restored Roadrunner and a blown 34 Ford...) the owners end up gravitating to the Maverick... usually with a tear in their eye or an excited giggle. What did I stumble across here???
You stumbled into the mav twitight zone...These cars were soo plentiful back in the day that ,virtually everyone has had an interaction of some sort with the cars. I have talked to many people who will wax poetic about their mav adventures...Enjoy it man!!! Its one of the bennys of being a Maverick...Owner.
Yep, its true. At a car show, people will stop and grin as they recall their Maverick experiences. Everyone wants to tell your theirs. The Mav gets more attention than much nicer Mustangs, Camaros, Vettes, etc. At an all Ford show, with much nicer cars, my (previously owned) Sprint got the Sponsor's Award from the dealer that hosted the show. He directed the Sprint be moved up to a prime spot.
People are more likely to be passionate about an automotive experience they have actually had (like the Mavericks/Comets) than with an experience they have not had or only dream about (Big Dollar Mustangs, and the like). It happened with my 4-door almost 20 years ago, and it happens with my Grabber now. A true "car of the people".
its also a matter of what is seen all the time. Camaros, Mustangs, a '72 Chevelle SS, a Duster, a couple of El Caminos can all be seen at almost any car show or even driving daily. they are average and common. the maverick/comet was a car that was sold as an compact. it was never marketed as a muscle car or performance car. when you have one of those popular cars your like a sheep i the heard. with a maverick you stand out of the crowd. also the maverick has great body lines.
Makes perfect sense. One of my best friends drove a '75 Maverick with a 302 in high school. He now drives a BMW Z3, but got emotionally distraught over the 'new' Maverick in my driveway. He's looking for one as we speak.
I have owned alot of Mustangs thru the years, but my Maverick gets all the goofy smiles. Yes they were every where in the 70's but ya dont see but a handful now. I like being the only Maverick at the Shows. Maybe I am really odd because I also have a Stock 1980 Pinto Rallye ...ya baby... Kirk
I get the same attention, at gas stations, parking lots, and on the highways. Even though mine is UGLY!!! I especially like young kids, 4-10 yrs old, in the back seat, with their faces plastered to the window asking mommy and daddy what that cool car is! I am 60 dB hearing impaired, so I can read their lips, and can tell what they are saying. And it has never been "Mommy, why is that car so UGLY?" I also get the same attention from adults, and especially from older Hispanic males, for some reason. I am amazed at how impressed and how excited and thumbs-uppy the old construction and landscaping guys driving old ford trucks get when I pull up beside them.
Yes, I am sure it happens to everyone. Don't drive the Maverick if you have somewhere to be because you will be late. Auto parts stores and gas stations are usually the worst. Everyone wants to talk about how they loved their old Maverick.
lol.. car lovers can be pretty funny sometimes. I imagine this effect gets even worse when you have a really nice looking motor and you pop the hood to check your oil.
