I just had a set of used Headman headers installed on my 72 Comet GT. The car is a 302, auto with power steering. The front tube on the drivers side just touches the shock tower. When I shift into reverse the tube bangs away on the shock tower until I shift into drive, then all is quiet again. The engine mounts were ok when the engine was dropped back into the car but now I wonder if the left one is compressed too much (old), or maybe there is a missing spacer. Looks like it wouldn't take much to completely clear the shock tower. Anyone ever experience this problem?
I would try new engine mount on the drivers side. other wise the bf hammer to clearance the tube is about all you can do.
You didn't say what headers they were. Are they speciffically for a Maverick/ Comet? If they are see above posts. If they are not and you still want to keep them, again see above posts. Good luck.
Yes its common, Last year when i did my V8 swap, I loosened all the mount bolts, gently (LOL) with a BFH taped a pry bar between the headers and shock tower than tighteng the mounts up. it gave me about 3/8 clearance.
