Drew, you putting that in yourself? I wonder if I could swap that in in place of my spool without having to reset all the rest of the rearend up.
Parts will be here tomorrow! Unfortunately I have to deal with the timing belt on my wife's car first, but once that's done I'll dig into it.
One day you will put in a 9in,if yours already is`nt,they are much stronger especially with 31 spline axles.
Finally did it. And it is wonderful in every way. It's a completely different car now. I can actually maintain traction in some corners at higher speeds than I could with the open diff. It sticks when I want it to and it slides awesomely when I don't. It doesn't do anything weird, drives just like it always did as long as I'm behaving myself. I would say the car tracks straighter and doesn't wander nearly as much, too. I didn't expect that. I had a change to check MPG over 200 miles immediately before and after - 13.7 with the new gear, 13.4 without. So, my mileage certainly hasn't suffered. It may have even improved. Oh, and the sound! I love how it revs higher, but not to the point of being ridiculous. It's like I'm right in my engine's power curve most of the time. It launches like a beast! So far, unless I'm brake torquing, it hooks. Just a little bit of spin when I hit it and it is off instantly. If I stall when I launch I get quite a bit more spin but it still takes off straight and it's still not all that much. There's no hopping or anything like that... Maybe it will behave differently on the track, (I intend to find out very soon) but right now it's a complete blast on the street. I've been waiting for this a long time. Thanks for all the help, guys. Here's a little vid, there will be more... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201641333618150
Truetrac and 3.25. I'll probably get a bigger gear when I get around to doing a 5-speed swap, but I need it to be highway capable in the interim. I may have what I believe to be a 3.80 center section lined up for when that happens. My brother knows a guy with 70's Mustang that has a C4 and "way too much gear for the highway" who is apparently eager to swap for the stock diff I just removed, so I may do that. But all that's a while away. For now, I finally consider the car "complete" mechanically, and I intend to focus future projects on improving the car's overall quality for a while. The paint is "driver quality" at best, the seats are starting to show some wear... I've had (and daily driven) the car long enough now that some of the things I've restored or replaced have had time to start getting old again. I feel like it's not at all far from being a really nice car though, now that one of the two things it's been aching for since I got it is done.
So, since you did it yourself, how hard was the Truetrac installation? I need to do that soon, so I can start focusing on my interior.
It was not at all difficult. I had more trouble getting the old center section off the housing than I did installing the Truetrac. A firmly mounted vise on a stout workbench is very helpful when it comes time for breaking bolts loose and torquing them down.
Congratulations! And thank you to every one that helped with the thread as well. It helped me a lot. After my gas tank I'm going to completely take apart my 9" and buy a true Trac upgrade to 31 spline axles so thank you
