I am converting to manual steering and a guy I know has a '71 inline 6 car with manual steering.. He said he would let me have the steering but says it won't work with my V8 car because it is from an inline 6 car, is this true? I need help fast because I am wanting to put the steering in before the motor goes in. Thanks to anyone with an answer.
Thanks a ton for the quick reply. He said I can have everything that is related to turning the car, should I use the manual steering box or the power steering box?
As Dave said, it will all work. I would personally recommend using the manual steering gear box as well. With the power steering gear box, it will be harder to steer the car and require more effort.
I converted my V-8 '73 to manual using everything from a six cylinder car. No problems. I used everything from the steering box down.
Thanks that helps a lot. He says the drag link is smaller in diameter and the steering box will have too much slop in it because its from a six cylinder..
Six cylinder cars did use different size parts back in the 60's. By the time Mavericks roll off the line they used the same.
I would keep your power steering box for 2 reasons. Because of the power assist, it will have less wear than the manual box. Secondly, it has a quicker ratio. All those who complain about hard to turn in a parking lots are just pansies. They probably drive automatics too.
