Bought my first 71 Grabber in 1974 from a gorgeous blonde...man, I wish I knew where she was now. Well, maybe not...she's probably as old as me now. I paid $1500 for it when it was 3 years old and still in pretty much mint condition. It's Grabber green, v8-c4, buckets. It was true love at first site. The red one you've seen posted on here a few times was purchased locally from a little ole lady (really was) but was transformed from a sixbanger into a nice restomod which I gave to my oldest son. I then purchased my third 71 on eBay, an original lime green V8 Grabber for my youngest son. I had to paint it yellow against my wishes but it still looks nice. I recently purchased my 4th 71 Grabber from a local guy who found me. I built it for myself just recently and have been very happy with it. It's Grabber blue with a very healthy 302. I'm almost finished with it so I'll have photos coming soon. Now it's time for me to get back on my original one and do a complete restoration on it. It's been in storage for 12 years now...shame on me. Oh yeah, the green one I bought in 1974 has the same exact vin number as the blue one I bought 30 years later with the exception of the last number...a 2 on the green car and a 7 on the blue one. Every other digit is identical!!!
no andysutt i painted those stripes myself after i bought it... and that ugly pain as you called it... is "Grabber Green". i used duct tape to tape off my lines... that's it.. nothing else... just 4 pisces of tape....
Never called it it ugly. I called it Nasty... Not meaning it looks bad. Just what color we call it. Nasty green... kinda like puke green, pea green, etc... just a "color" Nothing meant bad about it.
Ahh. sorry my slip up, out here, that's called neon green. lol guess that's just how diverse our country is eh?
Mom bought her '70 Maverick in 1972 and I got it to go to school in during the 80's (during the soaring gas prices since it's 6 cylinder got better gas milage then my '72 Mach 1 351C). The Mach 1 is long gone but the little green Maverick is still here.
My 17 year old son found my Comet at a guys house who does a lot of junk car towing and does a little bit of used part selling on the side. He tried to trade something for it--don't remember what--but the guy wanted cash. He told me about it; he didn't really know what it was, he said it looked like an old Mustang. Later on, we went to the guys house to look at a pickup for a friend of my sons and he reminded me of it,so I told him lets take a look. I knew at first sight that I had to have it! I have a 81 T-Bird rust bucket that we bought for my oldest son that was in to bad a shape to try to fix but had a good 302 and C-4 combo that I was looking for a good body to put it in and the Comet fit the ticket exactly! It is an original v-8 auto on the collum car, engine and tranny were gone, gave the guy $300 and $25 to bring it to my house. Now as soon as I get my sons rice burner 4wd pickup back together, I'm gonna start plucking guts and feathers outta that 'Bird for my new toy.
The '75 4dr-found it in the local trading post, traded a '79 fairmont for it in '93 The '72 Comet-through a friend of a friend, gave $900 for it in '97 The '70 Mav 2dr-found in the roundup magazine, went to Decatur,AL,gave $1800 for it in '98. They are still out there, you just gotta check the papers, hit the back roads and ask around. You'll be surprised what turns up!
My mom bought our 71 Mav in Reno, NV somewhere in 1978. She drove it down through the years, and during my senior year in high school I traded her my 1971 Pinto for it. I replaced the stright 6 with a 1977 302, added Craiger rims with BF Goodrich TA tires, had it painted (The Painter was supposed to paint it 1957 Chevy Madador red, but screwed up, he told me that ford didnt make a Madador Red and he picked the closest thing. The color was from a 1950 ford, but it was nice enough to keep) I had problems keeping it running and eventually got frustrated with it, and sold it in 1990 for $500, and now I wish I hadn't. The buyer took it to Texas where he supposedly turned it into a drag car. One day Ill have another like it. More pictures of my car: http://www.williamsondesign.com/maverick/index.htm Glen PS sorry about the big pictures, im not sure how to do the thumbnail version. 1979: 1987
My first car ('85 Mazda 626 LX) was going south, fast. Saved up $2,850 and bought a '91 Mustang 5.0 LX. Ice cream truck blew a stop sign and I t-boned the thing at about 40 mph on the way to the insurance company to have the car added to the policy. Only owned that Mustang for 1 day . Back to the Mazda. 6 mos later I found a '70 Maverick ( I-6, 3-on-the-tree) for sale in the classifieds and drove the p.o.s. Mazda across town and made a deal with the guy to trade the Mazda plus $1,200 for the Maverick . With the exception of the new paint job, the Maverick was in completely original, mint condition. Interior, chrome, body, etc. were perfect. 48k original miles. NO RUST. All that needed to be done was to adjust the timing. Maybe check the local classifieds, if your town has them. Lotsa good stuff there! Eric (silver70)
'a friend of mine was at the trash recycle station today. he saw a mav. go by on a skid truck.after a short run he was able to stop him. he called me on my cell phone and i bought it over the phone. the car was heading to the crusher." that is a post in '03 when i got the '73 grabber...frank...
Found my car in a similar way to Frank. I went with a friend to pay for another car, saw the Mav on back of a rollback. I asked about it, said it was on the way to the crusher. After checking the cowl vents, found a rust-free, but ugly and dented Mav. Asked how much the crusher was paying, he said $50. I said I would give him $100, and he took it, and delivered it to the shop. He even threw in the 4 cats nesting in the front seat. Been happy ever since, but a little lighter in the wallet.
I found my 72 right here on this forum!! GPZ 1100 had it advertised here and I found it while I was deployed in IRAQ(technology is great)! Thanks again GPZ for holding it for me untill I returned. Once again it shows you the kind of people we have here in our Mav/Comet community.
