I have a 1985 ford 302 block but i need a dipstick for it but there is alot of different ones so i was wondering if someone could tell me which would be a good one to ise or should i just plug off that hole in the block and buy a 70s timing cover thanks
I have bought Lokar dip sticks for motors. I just drained out the oil put on new filter w/oil and added the rest of 5 quarts to the motor. crank the engine, switch off and let set for a few minutes. pull the dip stick wipe it clean, now put it back in, pull it out and that's your...full line...mark it... you can do this really with any dip stick...
And dip tube if it doesn't have one... That said the stick & tube for the passenger side water pump inlet is different length from the driver side('70 up), and seems most of the suppliers don't carry the later stick & tube(need one for my Comet)... I'm 99% sure the late stick and tube can't be used with a front sump pan...
You'll need to use a dip stick that goes in the timing cover. I believe the 80's timing cover has a spot that can be punched out, but you will defiantly wont be able to use the dip stick in the block cause it wont go into the oil sump.
I cut a short piece off the bottom of the dip stick tube and put that in the block with some non-hardening Permatex. Then inserted a snug-fitting bolt (don't recall the size) into the tube, again with some Permatex. Worked fine.
