I've been thinking about putting an exhaust header on my Maverick with a stock 250 and the 1 barrel carb. Would I be gaining much performance wise?
I put a header on my car when I had a stock 250 in it. The only thing I gained was a little gas mileage on the hwy.. The car didn't feel any faster, actually lost some bottom end.
You will need to add more than a header to feel the difference. Shave the head to add more compression and re-curve the distributor to speed up the advance. My 250 feels faster than what I started out with.
