I’m trying to figure out where I’m going to mount my computer and module for my EFI system. I did some test fitting the other day and found the options very limited.

I have the harness passing through the firewall between the right apron and the large hole for the AC hose inlets. I had planned to mount the computer on the right bulkhead across from the AC box. The space is tighter than I thought and I’m not sure if it will fit in there. Since this is a Ford Racing harness, I also have a relay module that needs to go in there too.

I’m contemplating mounting the computer to the underside of the AC box. I would drill into the box and use machine screws. Inside the box, I would reinforce the area around the head of the machine screw with a thin metal plate and epoxy it in for a strong watertight seal.

I think I can get the module and a Dakota Digital fan controller to fit on the right bulkhead.

    What have you guys done?

Also, can anyone post a good shot of how they laid out their harness along the firewall to the engine?

    Thanks,
    Micah

i would not drill into the ac box, if you have any leaking screws it might leak right into your ecu. i would make a plate with threaded holes that match the ecu, then epoxy it to the bottom of the box, you would loose the thickness of the plate but worth not worrying about leaking.

It WILL leak into the ECU, no doubt about it. That flat spot under the case is the catch for the evaporator. There is space above the AC box as well you might want to look into making a bracket for the ECU and relays. Just leave enough wire length to pull the whole thing down and out for service. I wasn't able to fit my ECU on the RH kick panel. I mounted it on the LH kick panel, but I wouldn't do that either. If I do it over again, it's going on RH kick panel with a VintageAir HVAC unit taking the place of the huge FoMoCo one.

Another option is the EEC extension harness that Ford Racing used to sell so you could mount it in the trunk or behind the rear seat. You might have issues finding one new though. You could just lengthen the wires...

Yeah, I was concerned with water leakage. Thought the epxy would seal it all up.

The idea of epoxying a plate to the underside is a good idea. I will look into that.

I dont see any room on top of the AC box. I wish they would have made the computer just a bit thinner and I could fit it in the right bulkhead. Module is about 6 x 3 x 2 1/2. Makes it difficult to find a spot for it too.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Micah

On our car we made a bracket that mounted to the under lip of the dash and then mounted the ECU to that. We were able to find a location that did not interferre with anything else and kept the ECU tucked up out of site.

I am going to use a granada center console in my car and am planning to install the ecu under the front of the console, I have a ron francis wiring harness and there is a long lead to the computer, so if that doesnt work it will go under the right seat.

    Steve,
    Can you post a picture?

Also, would like to see some underhood shots of the loom if anyone can post some. Just looking for routing ideas.

    Thanks,
    Micah

Thought about the passenger seat option too, but the harness is about an inch in diameter and a little hard to hide. Also the bucket seat tracks are not friendly to sneaking the wire in without drilling a huge hole in one side.

I have an original consolette that I am planning to install but want to use is as designed. Don’t know if the computer would even fit.

I'm thinking the underside of the AC box is my only real option. Just not a lot of room to work with. I wish I would have discovered this earlier and made a compartment in the front of the passenger side floor. Too late now. Epoxying to the underside is most likely.

Remove fender and cut a hole in the kick panel and box in the sides/back. It should look factory when finished.

The Explorer I had, had a really nice underhood bracket for the ECU, it was even weather proof.

Yeah, well, the car is just back from paint. Did enough cutting and welding before it was painted. Wish I would have thought about this one before hand. Not looking to start opening her up right now. Would have been a good spot. Thanks though.
