Ok so I got a knocking well ticking sounds just like lifter tick, it wasnt doing this until after I decided to mat the heck out of it and took her up to about 6200, after there was a small ticking and I assumed lifter.
Now I have pulled every roller, inspected the rod for bent, the roller for free bearing movement (only 12k miles on them) then set zero lash plus quarter turn, then half turn, still ticking. So I decide to loosen poly locks, fire it up and tighten each one until it quit, it never quit as I tightened until the engine rpm would barely lower telling me that I had gone plenty far then I backed it back up.
The ticking is coming from the right bank facing engine and I'm at a loss, would a collapsed lifter be the culprit?
And no it's not a leaking head or exhaust gasket, definately a metallic ticking, anybody know what I'm missing?:hmmm:

    unsure

I have changed the oil, no metal however didnt pull pan, but this is a constant ticking (loud), how would a broken skirt make a consistant knocking/ticking?

do the rubber hose thing and find where the noise is coming from. should be able to put it on each rocker arm to locate it if it's a lifter...:yup:

    Hose

Yeah I didn't think about that, with everything I have already done I just can't think of anything but lifter unless I'm missing something which is likely since it's been years since I did any old school V8 tinkering :hmmm:

    verify

If someone will please verify this process on adjusting roller rockers just to be sure ......1.start with either side of engine and turn until intake valve opens, then when it closes and exhaust valve just starts to barely move, back it back up just that tiny bit, at this point both valves are fully closed and zero lash can be set 2.turn nut until just start to feel pushrod get tight (with fingers) then turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn preload then lock it down 3.move to next cylinder and repeat until all have been set. I have done this as well as what I have already mentioned, what gives?

check for an exhaust leak around the exhaust ports. the hose to the ear trick works very well here.

also when does the clicking happen? all time, only on acceleration, etc..

A weak or broken fuel pump spring can sound like a lifter "tick".

    clicking

It happens all the time from as soon as you start it, gets faster as you increase rpm, now since the current exhaust system is so loud I dont know if it goes away when I climb into it or not but I cant hear it once I hammer it, I don't think it's an exhaust leak as it sound's so metallic, however I know leaks can really make a ticking, this would explain why it started after I showered down on it hard if it blew a gasket, I'll try the hose tomorrow.

Just saying yes it will sound just like that. When I broke piston skirt I adjusted the lifters a few diff ways then changed them completely. Wasn`t till I pulled the pan and found the pc laying in the pan off the piston. Also if I remember rite Razersharp did the same thing a few yrs ago at a round up. I kind of remember him having his valve covers off and checking for loose rockers and it was a broke piston. I could be wrong though maybe he will chime in with his finding. What pistons do you have? I had trw `s

Look at your spark plugs, they can tell you a lot.If any of the tips are whiteish you may have leaned the mtr out, which due to heat will cause a piston to gaul to the cyl. wall. This will cause a constant knock because metal has melted off the piston making it smaller & it will rock back & forth in the bore.Hope this is not what happened because it means rebore & new pistons.
