Putting a 302 in the Mav, but I can't seem to get the pulleys to line up. I'm sure the old 302 I had 20 years ago only had one belt, but out of several crates of pulleys, I can't seem to make it work. I know after a while I swapped an electric water pump on it, but it only had one belt, no idlers or anything. Any ideas? I just came back from a junk yard, but everything had p/s, a/c, several belts... I'm lost!

Does the crank pulley and alternator pulley line up? Ford had several different depth single-groove waterpump pulley's so you have to get the correct one.

I've got 20 years of saving pulleys, probably around 40 crank and water pump pulleys, but none of the combos will line the three up at one time. So that's why I was wondering what was different, or if there is a set up that will work. I may have a correct crank pulley, I seem to only have about three different ones, even a one groove-deep one.

Are you running a stock harmonic damper?

If you have pulleys that will line up the crank and water pump pulley you can adjust the spacers on the alternator.

I've got the stock late (50oz) balancer. I can't slide the alt back far enough to line it up without it hitting the timing cover. When I find something that might line up, the diameters are too big and they hit.

I didn't look long for mine. I bought a set of March Single Groove Pulleys. I'm gonna have them powder coated black this winter ...

I have lived in GA since 1995 ... and believe it or not ... I can't remember a single winter since I've been here that there hasn't been nights it hasn't gotten down into the teens .... GA is the land of black ice .... :)

When I first moved to GA I was under the impression I could wear shorts year round ... I was wrong .... and my town does own several salters/sanders as well ...

I was just looking at a set of single pulleys today.
The best way I can describe is the water pump pulley is 'shallow' when laid next to an A/C or P/S water pump pulley. The diameter may have been slightly larger too (on the single belt pulley).
One other thing I noticed is that the water pump pulley was the same diameter as the single crank pulley.
So, I would look for a single crank pulley of about 5 to 5.5 inch diameter, then find the single upper pulley that is the same diameter. Then lay the pulley on a flat surface and make sure it is only around 2" tall. The multi belt w/p pulley is about 3" tall when laid flat (because the belt is moved closer to the pump itself).

Sounds like you have a good selection, hope this leads you in the right direction.

    Dave

Edit: Diameter was more like 5.5"...

Boy, that really helps.... I'm messing with crank pulleys around 8-9", that's where my problem is. I think I might have the right water pump pulleys, but the crank pulley is not. Any tips on where to look for one?
