Is this a good deal http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/pts/2057390442.html I want a 302 engine because I have a 200 in in my 70 maverick now but i was wandering how hard it will be to get this to where I can put it in the car, what i need to do to get it where it will work and how much it will cost. also would it be better to just wait and get an engine that runs?
It's a crap shoot. It really needs to be looked at,by someone who knows what to look for. Also have to think,...what made the piston crack?Did/was it run with a blown head gasket, and water filled the cylinder, was it just totally run to death?Did water mix with the oil,and ruin the crank and bearings? There are a lot of "what-if's".If your still working with your $300 budget, there's $100 for the block,$175+tax for a reground crank and bearings, from your local Advance.Money's gone and you still need all the other componets,...including machine work, new pistons,if the block needs bored, heads, and still no where near ready to drop it into a maverick. There are deals out there for a decent running 302,for a couple hundred bucks.
For a roller block that has a little more life in it for a rehone, i would say around 100 would be good even with the cracked piston. I would however keep on looking .
last time i cracked a piston i also cracked the cylinder bore. If you decide to get it check it really good, because its hard to spot cracks in the cylinders.
there is guy selling a 302 in op give him a call http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/pts/2075318765.html
Cracked piston can also be from detonation. Won't affect the block though if that's what happened, depending on how long it was run after it cracked.
If you are ever in Saint Pete, Florida I have a great running 302 motor I will be getting ride of. Its the one in my avatar. I just built a 331 stroker and wont be needing the old 302 motor. Its a strong motor, doesnt smoke, and has all new gaskets and seals so doesnt leak a drop of oil, its all original and even has a brand new carb on it.
