I have always thought a a c4 automatic was the same regardless of motor. Is that the case or were there different versions? I have a 74 Maverick with I6 250 and automatic c4. I would like to put in a 302 but would like to keep the transmission that is in, as I had it rebuilt in 99 then parked it a few years later. Also having a hard time finding/selecting a 302 would a newer 302 work or only the ones from the 70’s? Thank you for help and advice!
Welcome!!! There are multiples of C4. Basically a 250 trans will fit the 302, but 170/200 would require a different bell housing. There are less clutches in the small 6, light duty trans. Also HD pan fill, 168 tooth bell housing C4 used in trucks/full size. You'll need a flexplace that matches balance of chosen 302/5.0 (no, the 250 cannot be used). Before '81 302 had a 28 0z balance while later uses 50 oz, 250 are zero balance. Would be easier swap to find a "fully dressed " engine, hunting/finding pullies & brackets will be maddening. If you find a late 5.0 It'll require a 157 tooth, 50oz balance, aftermarket part only. These later engines will also require adapter bracket, as there is no boss in the block to mount stud for column shift linkage (not needed for floor shift). I went through most of this when I swapped a '91 5.0 into my Comet.
Here's a listing on C'list for a '63 Falcon but says engine is separate for additional $600 (last pict in ad). A full set of matching pullies is worth probably $200. https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/pts/d/kerrville-falcon-speed-v8-car/7841000787.html
