Now that I have figured out how I want to build my engine I want to figure out what tranny I should start looking for. My maverick that I am building is a 70 model. I read on here somewhere that a 70 had a smaller tunnel. Can someone tell me if I went with a 4 spd tranny would I still have trouble with the tunnel , or is this only with automatics? If I would still have trouble with the tunnel which 4 speed would fit the best, and still hold up under a engine putting out 200 - 300 hp.
If 3 speeds and C4s were used in 70, then a Toploader will fit fine. I think tunnel issues are a problem with 'unusual' tranny selections. Dave
The toploader itself is not the problem. The shift linkage is very tight. I believe Barry ran one in his 70 so it can be done. Maybe he will chine in and let you know what if any mods had to be done. If you could find a BourgWarner T10, it is much a much more compact package with the shifter and would have less problems. It is a weaker trans than the toploader, but still very stout for most applications. I'd consider going the T5 route. With the internal rail shifter, it should fit with no problems, plus overdrive.
you guys life must be just as exciting as mine. Go to work, come home, play in shop, get on computor.:bananaman I would have to say that this site has the most info I have ever seen. thanks
