Hi all, I got a bit of a problem and not sure what to do about it: My 70 mav needs all new front drum brake- this will be the second time I will have had them replaced since 2003. I had a shop do all 4 wheels the first time (for multi-hundreds of dollars) and now the fronts are again toast. Im in college, and just dont have the money to have a shop fix 'em. My question is this: Im fairly mechanically-inclined, but Ive never done any brake work. Is replacing the the front brake hardware straightforward? I might consider selling the mav after the brakes are fixed, whether I do them myself or not. Anyone at all interested in a 70 250 cid 2-door mav?
sounds normal on the wear on the shoes. I think you could do them (one side at a time for referrence) with a good service manual nearby. I am sure you can find a buyer easily too!
I agree, doing brakes are not hard. Do one at a time using the other one for referance. Get a good set of brakes. Try rebestos with the rivats not the glue ones. They will last longer and they will not come apart. If the car is still in good shape keep it don't sell.
Performing a brake job is one of the first jobs a "shade tree mechanic" takes on. You can get lots of help searching for help on google. ref: http://www.extremehowto.com/xh/article.asp?article_id=60199 and http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=how+to+replace+brake+drums&btnG=Google+Search Good luck and let us know how it went.
