the 72 up torino calipers tuck under the caliper bracket on the top side and has a single slide with a bridge style spring that sits on top of the slide with a single bolt securing the slide.
now i am not sure but you guys who would like to put more stop in the front may be able to change the caliper brackets and run the larger torino style brakes and rotors. Just a thought i i dont know if the maverick/ granada spindles would hold the rotors? Thankyou for the parts post above now you can see the simularities in parts!
The spindle just looks like one off a car that has the spring up on the upper A-frame. Ford must have figured out a way, when they went to the full frame car, to be able to keep that style spindle. It seemed odd that it would match so closly. It's been so long since I owned my own 72 Gran Torino that I couldn't remember what the spindles looked like if my life depended on it. If this all winds up working for you, there will be a lot of happy Maverick/Comet owners as they will have a lot more options for disc brakes. Do you think that any of the small differences will affect front end alignment numbers?
It dont look like alinment will be a issue such as the ball joints are they are in line with each other. i dont know if the tie rods will need alot of adjusting or not. I hope to mock it up this weekend and take some pics for you all to see i feel real good about this project. Maybe you will know but is there any camber / caster adjustment on the mavericks? it looks like i could adjust the lower control arms a little.
I had that same thought. And I don't know, but I intend to find out. There's a '74 Gran Torino and a '74 Ranchero at Pull-A-Part that may very well be losing their calipers, brackets and rotors this weekend.
The lower control arm bolt is on an eccentric and that is where the camber is adjusted. The caster adjustment is done at the top a-frame with shims.
I am glad there is adjustment for the camber caster i would have made offset bushings if i had to. lol
Well guys and gals they work perfect. No adjustment needed on caster camber or tie rods everything lines up just the same as the stock spindle. I threw on a old rotor i had here so i could measure the caster camber with a actual degree guage i used for setting up a circle track car.
Good deal!!! Can you give us a recap of what exactly you had to do with any mods? An this is how America was discovered!!!!
The torino spindle was same design. The mods to be done was to the lower ball joint area. The ball joint area was thicker and had a bigger hole. I had that area milled to the same thickness as the original and made a tapered bushing to reduce it to the same as the original of the maverick spindle. Now i hear they make bushings somewhere for this type of deal. You can refer to the pics in the previous post for visuals. This was a very simple conversion for people like me that dont have a whole lot of money or availability to buy the granada/ mustang parts.
Kudos (or however that goes) to you,,,, Well, Hats off to Ya!!! Always good to keep them gears thinking!!!! Can't wait till all is done
