so i just replaced my battery and the red ALT light on my dash is blinking very faintly. but enough for me to notice. i dont know what that is or why its doing it. any ideas? its when the key isnt in there too, and the radio goes on without the keys too.
Check out entire system. Regulator may be shorting out or you may have a cross over feed in fuse block. I would disconnect battery when you are not with car, till it's fixed. Could be a fire in the making here. Better safe than sorry! If you can not locate problem, take it to a shop or buddy who is good with wiring. You may want to replace the regulator before going to shop an see if this fixes it. This problem may have been why you had to replace Battery.
I'm betting it's going to be a shorted diode inside the alternator which will simply mean just replacing the alternator. It's getting hard to find someone to repair these old ones now although it is feasible. I've rebuilt many of them over the years and it does require some soldering. The diodes come in a horseshoe shaped rectifier and would be replaced as a unit. When you do get the problem fixed (if this is in fact the problem) I also would replace the regulator. The regulator could be allowing the alternator to overcharge in the first place which can cause lots of problems. They are fairly cheap so don't take a chance. Good luck with it and keep us posted.
My sons 70 mav does the same thing. I replaced the alternator and regluator and it still lights some. The next step is the light and wiper switch which they needed to be replaced.
when i start my car and let it idle the alt light will stay on untill i give the throttle a tap and it'll go off. is that normal?
