Drove home tonight in the 73 4 door, with a boiling rad. and coolant seeping out between the head and the block above the spark plugs. I'm guessing head gasket. I have little knowlage of the 250 6. So I have a few questions::huh:

1 What would be involved in changing the head gasket? What has to be removed ?
2 Would I have to machine the mateing surfaces?
3 I know newer cars with aluminum heads that the heads warp. is that the same wiith the old cast iron heads?
    3 Can I Re-use head bolts?
    4 Costs for parts?
    Thanks

first thing to do is to lift the head to see if any damage to the block or head if crack apear and if not replace the gasket but it's sure a good thing to make veryfied the head it's not luxury.

for the rest I let someone else answer

    good luck

Very easy to do. I have done it several times. I would recommend getting the head redone while it is off and put in the hardened seats. I would reuse the bolts...but that is just me.

When the controversy first started about harden seats, everything I read said the only time you will see any adverse effects is when you continually run at highway speeds all day long. Around town would have no effect. So unless you have and want to spend the money to totally redo the head, I wouldnt worry about it.

They say if you put on an '80-up head you can get a little more compression/HP out of it,plus it's already setup for unleaded.

The late model head (78 and up?) also has bigger intake valves...
