I've been running around with no rear brake stop lights. Local autozone is out of stop brake light switches. Can I use a substitute from another car?

I highly doubt it. I have never seen another car with a brake light switch even similar to a Maverick switch.

Try NAPPA or another parts store. Someone has them.

the one in our 68 cougar was pretty similar and could have been modded to fit. only in a pinch though, you will want the right one asap. the cougar had power disc brakes(stock) and i had to take three back to get one that worked correctly. apparently the non power one looks exactly the same but takes more force to activate. so even if you find a switch that looks correct and seems correct, if it isnt for the right brake setup, you may just about have to slam on the brakes before the switch activates. you should see the little plastic piece of !@#$ they put in my big F250 change that one almost yearly:mad:.

Instead of running around lightless (clueless to others), I have wired in a simple toggle switch to keep from getting rear ended and to warn other drivers of my intentions. Please keep in mind that this was only a temporary fix. it was latter fixed right with the right part.

Thats exactly what I did for a couple of days when I couldn't figgure out how to get mine back on. Just bought a $2 horn buttom from Wall Mart and wired it up and set it on the seat. Every time I pushed the brakes, I pushed the button. :)

One night one of my friends was following me in his truck and there was a SUV between us. He was behind the SUV. I kept pushing the button and every time I did he said the SUV would tap his brakes also even though I wasn't actually hitting my brakes. That was pretty funny. :)
