Brakes are so squeaky.....

    Hey all, long time no see! Just did my brakes (drum) since my hold-down pin managed to break off and thrash my shoes/drums....However, my brakes are super squeaky, it sounds like the front-passenger wheels that are squeaky but its hard to tell for sure. Any ideas on what could be causing it? :hmmm:

    Did you have the drums turned? Did they get scored when the pin broke? Many years ago I replaced the shoes without getting the drums turned and they squeaked.

    Take some emery paper and scuff the inside drum surface real well (in the same general direction of rotation). Do the same to the shoe surfaces. This will remove any glazing that the shoe or drum surface might have developed. Give it a go and see if the squeak goes away.

    I always douse everything in brake parts cleaner during reassembly, just to make sure no debris finds its way between the shoe and the drum.

    Cleaner we did lots of, replaced both back drums but not the front.

    cheap shoes have lots of metal dust in them

    They have removed asbestos, (per EPA) and added metal to all brakes.
    That is why brake pads outlast the rotors.

    is it a...pulsing squeek or one long squeek as long as you are on the brakes?

    I do this but use...80 grit paper...
    I block sand...my pads to get a flat surface...:yup:
    if i don't turn my rotors, i glassbead them...

    ...wear a dust mask...

    A little bit of both actually...normally when i first start driving it is constant...but there is also a pulsing squeak from time to time when i stop and it tends to grab when it pulses.

    mine were pulsing the other day...found a bent axle flange on the drivers side...new axles ordered, should be here today...:thumbs2:
    thinking it happened the other day when it went sideways when it hit 2nd gear...:chirp:

    Squealing is actually a high speed chatter. Make sure drums and brake shoes are true.

    I drag mine back and forth on the concrete driveway. That should be right around 80-grit...

    Brake drums are trued by turning them down on a brake lathe. Brake shoes should make full contact with the trued drum. They can be rearched, but it is rarely needed. They will seat themselves after being driven for a few hundred miles.
