72's did not come w/ disk brakes. Most who change/upgrade Maverick fronts, use Granada swap/upgrade.\
Hi Everett: Looks like a Granada Setup .. We changed a set of these out for a CAMARO setup ( after a couple of mods ) and its a piston type and doesn't rely on the caliper ' SLIDING ' to activate the braking procedures. Lubing these old units and the 'contact areas' was necessary to have them function properly. How's things going ? Cometized (Chip)
That's interesting! First I've seen mention of this mod. I assume Ford does not use this sys. today? The only time I ever put lube on mine was when I did a brake job - never seem to have an issue w/ caliper hanging up. At least, didn't seem to have an issue. What he has looks like Granada units. What mods were needed to mount the Camaro units? Doing OK here in this deep-freeze, not going anywhere I don' t have too. Have my battery on batt. maintainer during this freeze but will take the car out when there is no snow.
Hi Everett: Glad you're doing okay ! Me too ! I'll get some information together on the Brake Setup and I'll send it to you. I sold that car years ago so I don't have much information. We have since also installed Wilwood brake 4 piston calipers on my COMET . Really made a difference. Kims MAVERICK has the front LARGE GM Calipers with D52 Brake Pads and steel braided lines. Bill had a Camaro years ago and had the caliper and hoses laying around and he used the Heidts brackets for the callipers and then Bill made his own mounting brackets for the hoses. I just checked and the weather in Chicago is Brrrr .... I remember those days .. I'm from Chicago also and I used to have a Fire Escape Business and made Repairs , New Construction, Pan Stairways etc.. Many days I was up 15 floors or more with the ' wind ' blowing up my (shirt) while making repairs in some alleyway in the Loop . Ah yes ... Them were the ' good ole days ! Still miss Chicago and have a lot of friends still living there. Cometized (Chip)
Interested in the 4 piston setup! I assume w/ that setup, 17" minimum size wheels necessary? I am thinking a lot of others wud be interested in your setup. I may consider going Wilwood 4 caliper when my next brake job, but, really want to keep my stock type rally wheels, esp. since just bought new tires. Interesting to know ur from Chicago area; where was ur business located? You still basically in that business and have the cars as a hobby? You and Bill make some great modifications on these cars and a lot can be learned from your experience and knowledge.
Hi again Everett: My business was ABILITY IRONWORKS, INC. on Ogden avenue .. I was an Ironworker then with two crews andsome Subs and a Painting Crew . I visited Florida on Bike Week in 78 and decided after a ride on my Harley through the Orange Blossoms I decided to move here . I did Ironwork originally and made some IRON horse stall gates..but I was asked to design an Aluminum Horse Gate by an architect friend and when we did they liked it so much they ordered 96 gates, and 96 stall front grilles !! That launched me into the ALUMINUM products. I've been manufacturing Aluminum Horse Stall Components since the early 80's . I do Aluminum Products exclusively now and so far GOD has blessed my business and we've managed to continue doing what we do . I have ALWAYS been into Cars and Bikes in Chicago and originally bought a 74 COMET for my Daughter when she was beginning Hi School and she hated it ! I kept it and started fooling around with it . you know .. Bigger Rims and Tires , another Engine , another Tranny .. a BIGGER engine , and STRONGER tranny .. at BIGGER POSI .. etc.etc.etc. I kept finding Mavericks and Comets everywhere I looked and soon I had several . My Daughter finally seen how much fun " I " was having and asked me for her OWN .. I found a 72' Maverick and we are on it's SECOND BUILD .. She loves her car and I'm almost ready to turn it over to her . Bill is a real class act ; He had a 10 second bike that he raced all over the country twenty years ago and I met him while walking my dog one afternoon and mentioned that I sometimes could use ' part time' help .. He obliged .. I discovered immediately that he was Amazing .. Knew more about cars than I could imagine. Bill has a history of being in the parts business for 15 years before I met him. He has built ten cars with me so far and every one of them was and IS unique to some degree. His engineering and fabrication skills are evident in most everything he does. There's too many to list. I'm blessed to have him with us for the last twenty years. Alright .... that's quite enough I'm sure . Someday I'll put some of the cars Bill has completed UP on my CAMEO website . I have all of them in photo folders in all stages of the builds. Cometized (Chip)
