Hello guys, I just completed swapping the 351W, I'm reusing the stock c4 transmission. All wiring is done, but the motor won't turn, i tested the starter and it's good. I'm thinking the bolts on the converter are in the way, but I would hate to loose the transmission just to find out it's something else. Everything seemed to line up when we installed the transmission/flexplate etc. What else could it be, the motor did turn for a little bit then it got stuck, now when I try to start it, it makes this nasty clunking sound. This is the only thing I need before I get to hear what this 351w sounds like
will the motor turn at all (by hand)? do you have the motor plate installed? sounds like...converter not seated.
motor,,, starte plate is the thin 1/8 plate that goes between bell housing an engine. did tranny seat up to engine or did you force it-draw up with mounting bolts? Stock converter? Did you pull starter an recheck it? could be wrong starter. Try an rotate eng. backwards also
Motor plate is the thin plate that goes between the motor and flex plate. Did you have to pull the tranny to the motor with the bolts or did it slide together completely and then put the bolts in? Is it in a gear besides park? Hate to say it but it does sound like you did not have the torque convertor seated all the way in, if this is the case then more than likely there is damage to the pump in transmission. If you can take the bolts loose on the convertor and move it away from the flex plate then that is not the problem, it should only move a little 1/8 inch or so. Loosen bolts to bellhousing and see if it turns then
Thanks guys, I remember the motor plate now. It's in there, it seemed to go in just fine. I installed the transmission after the engine went in, I had bought a converter that did not fit so I decided to put the stock one back on, I'm reusing the same starter, i tested by removing it and turning the ingnition key, it spinned fine. I think it may be something with the converter, my question is do I have to take the transmission down again? or can I get away with just loosen it up a bit just to seat the converter right? Also, the motor did turn on the 1st attempt just a bit, but then it got stuck. thanks for your help guys...
It sounds like the converter is not completely seated. When you pulled it up using the bell housing bolts you forced the converter back into the pump gears. They are probably broken and wedging the converter snout. That is why the engine will not turn. You will need to pull the transmission and inspect it to see how bad they are.
Good question, the motor is new, i turned it before i put it in and I heard good compression. I just dropped the transmission, some teeth on the flexplate are damaged about half way, the transmission seems to be fined . I"m buying a new flexplate along with a new torque converter, I had bought a 3000 B&M before but for some reason the transmission wouldn't close all the way with it so I returned it and installed the stock one again. Can anyone recommend a good converter? I'm just glad the damaged was minimal. Also the flexplate has some big circle dings on the back, I'll know when i take it down where that came from, for today this is enough. Thanks for your help guys...
I learned to fit/check the flexplate on the motor...then the converter to the flexplate...then the converter to the transmission...then the transmission bellhousing to the motor. otherwise the..converter may not be seated, the bolts in converter too big for flexplate, converter snout too large for crank. i had one that the converter snout was the wrong spline...and a bellhousing that was wrong... ...so now i fit everything before i go to install the assy... ...
