I know many use the headers,,, but I made a set of cast irons work, and have good clearence all the way around! The manifolds I used were off a 88 t-bird, there was a casted lip, or ledge along the outside of the manifold,, it sticks out about 5/8 of an inch,,, or more. I put the manifolds in a Mill, and shaved those ledges down, almost flat with the casting,,, left a bit over to still keep it strong,,, From before, I could not even get the manifold inbetween the head and the shock tower,,, Now, after I machined the sides down, I have over 1 inch between the manifold and the tower!! I did have to notch down by the flange mount, so the steering box will clear, and I have about 3/4 of an inch between the box and the flange. I can actually fit the manifolds inbetween the block and the tower, bout drop em to the floor. I had headers on a truck once,,, got tired of having 5 extensions to change a spark plug,,, or get burned, or crawl under the truck to reach one,,, So, If anyone wants pictures of what I did to make the cast iron manifolds clear, just ask,, Ill be happy to help if someone is interested. It will be easy to change those plugs now!!! Chad

So do they flow better than the factory manifolds? I'm confused ... or are these some sort of cast iron header?

Our Mav driver side manifold looks very free flowing (for a manifold).
It's the passenger side that needs help IMO.
The 289 Hipo manifolds don't work in our cars...
So I was checking up a little and found the 75-78 Mustang 2 passenger side manifold.
    It looks very free flowing.
So now I wonder if the M2 passenger manifold will fit.
If that manifold works, and was combined with our D/S manifold, it might be plenty for those of us that don't want/need to hassle with headers.
Maybe squeeze some extrude hone through them if you want to get fancy.
Then combine with port matching and a good H or X pipe dual exhaust.
    Just a thought.

The Explorer I got my GT40Ps off of had a stainless steel manifold that looked like a shorty header on it. I think it was 1998 model. I almost took it with me for the maverick, but decided on the long tubes.
