hi everyone wondering if someone can answer a most likely dumb question has my maverick out a week ago no problems ran fine few dyas later i took it for a ride and noticed alot of smoke coming out of the sidepipes and it wasnt running all that good i pulled the plugs and noticed that their oil soaked including the threads i cleaned them up and reinstalled them car is running great again altho still smoking badly further looking i noticed that the rear of the valve covers are leaking badly is it possible the oil is seeping down into the cylinders ... or do you think the rings went south ?

first things first gat a compreshion check on the engine.but if its burnin oil and yer plugs are soaked then you have bad piston rings.youl probly have to tear doun the engine and rebuild it.there comes a time when we all have to do it! lol

thanks i figured that would be the answer ....oh well i got the motor for nothing so i cant complain lol got 2 good years out of it ..so i guess it goes on the back burner.... having my 383 built for my 69 charger right now .... but it will give me a chance to redo the engine bay anyhow lol

Is it all cylinders? Could be valve seals?? Has it been sitting for awhile?

its making sence that the rings went bad when we put it together we used the wrng flywheel ( had wrong weight) so when we drove it very bad vibration so we removed the wrong weight and simply welded on the right weight how ever i was alays skeptical this would work vibrationed eased up alot but its stll there a little to this day but i got 2 years out of it

if the valve stem seals got hard and broke they can fall into the oil return holes in the heads. with the motor tilted tward the back the oil will collect and get sucked into the cylinders. I would pull the rocker covers and have a look as new gaskets are cheep.

set the valve cover back on and start the motor, let it run about a minute. remove the cover as fast as possible and see if the oil is draining back fast enough to keep it off the valve guides and seals. might even just pour a qt. of oil down the return holes in the head.

tip...if you get too much oil in a motor just take the oil filter off and pour the oil out and put it back on.:yup:

well i noticed that there is quite a bit of oil haging around the the heads more than i expected so i soaked it all up with rags to get a good look at evrything no evidence of any sludge or hard rubber peices to be found
