Ok, so I'm new to the forums and never been part of any forum before this....so please excuse any forum "newbie" problems I may have until I get used to this. Anyway...

I just bought a 1971 Maverick 4-door last week. She's in good shape with the 302 and 2BBL carb with the 3-speed auto tranny. She's all stock with no modificiations at this point. She idles a little rough and there's some stuttering at low RPMs when in gear and applying throttle. She's died a few times trying to pull out into traffic, which can be "interesting" to say the least. I'm looking to bump up the efficiency of the motor and increase my MPG since this will be my daily driver. I'm working on getting the carb tuned in and I'm considering converting from the stock points distributor to the electronic ignition. So that leads me to this....

What electronic ignition conversion kits are available that will work on my motor? I've looked around but I'm not sure what would be recommended for my application (better power, good MPG, better overall effeciency). I'd like a kit that includes a coil that would match the modules voltage needs and provide some better spark than normal. A new distributor cap and rotor would be nice too. Also, would any of this require a Control Module (similar to the MSD 6AL) and if so, what do you suggest? I know this is a lot of criteria I'm trying to meet, so I appologize if your answer may need to be long-winded. I do appreciate your help though! Thanks everyone!

Ok, a couple more questions (sorry, I'm still learning about the electronic ignition conversion):

    1) What advantage is there (if any) to use a Ignition Box, such as this: http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=5811

    2) Are there any kits that could eliminate the need for the vacuum advance? Would that require a new distributor (assuming it would)? If so, what do you suggest?

    3) Are there any brands to avoid due to being overpriced, junk, etc.?

    4) I'd prefer something that provides multiple spark. Again, any suggestions? I know that the Pertronix Ignitor III does this, but do any others do this well for less money? Is this a definite upgrade from the Ignitor I or Ignitor II kits?

    5) I'd prefer a kit that would include everything I needed to just drop it in, hook it up and drive. I'd like to not have to mix and match everything if possible. I've seen some kits with the distributor, coil, module, etc. for around $200. Any preferences?
Again, thank you guys for all your help!!!

An Ignitor III, pretty much does what most other systems do, it's just all in one.

an ignition box like the msd is overkill for stock to mild street motors. the pertonics will effectivly get rid of the points and not cost an arm and a leg. get the recomended pertronics coil.
you can get a new cap and rotor at any autoparts store. opt for the premium offering. they will use copper terminals.
as for spark pulg wires i prefer the accel 300+ race wires. they have a lifetime warente and i know a race team that dyno tested every wire they could get there hands on and these were the best.
for spark plugs get standard coper plugs. use autolite or motorcraft.

Mallory Unilite has a total mechanical distributor. If you building a street car I suggest staying with a vacuum advance. It will get better gas mileage. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MAA-3755101/

I recommend getting the spike filter too. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MAA-29351/

:Welcome: Jory. Where in Texas do you live? I live near Dallas and have tons of Mav parts and 302 parts.

PM me if your Mav needs.

Yep, up in big Van Alstyne (population around 2,500). Well, I've gotten some good input from you guys and I appreciate it. I'll probably be trying to find a good deal for a PerTronix Ignitor III and Flame Thrower Coil. But for now I have another problem....

The choke on my Autolite 2100 is sticking in the open position and the plastic Fast Idle Cam Lever broke! I may pull it off (since it's not working anyway) and measure it out to get another made in aluminum. Otherwise I'm going to have to buy a whole other carb to get this part, right? This carb was supposedly recently rebuilt, but I'm getting a rough idle and a lot of hesitation at low rpm's when trying to accelerate. Any ideas?

Ok, looks like I'll be getting a Pertronix Ignitor III and a Pertronix 60,000 Volt E-Core. Anyone else use this setup and have any suggestions? What are some good plugs? I'm going to be picking up some Accel 300+ wires. My distributor and rotor are pretty new and are in good shape already, so they will stay for now.

I use the Autolite plugs as recommended and a maximum gap of .034" ( I gap mine as small as possible without getting a miss at idle, usually at .028"). That keeps the voltage down which makes a hotter (amperage) spark and less wear and tear on the plugs, wires, coil, cap and rotor.
