Those of you on a high speed internet connecting, give this a listen. That was the first time I drove the Maverick last Saturday after I got the engine and new transmission back in. Thats with an open exaust manifold with about a 3 foot piece of pipe connected to it. What mufflers and what size pipe would you guys suggest I get? I want to try and keep that sound but just tone it down a little bit for the cops. The car has glass packs on it right now, and it has more of an angry bee hive sound to it. I showed one of my friend's dad's that video and he flat out didn't believe that the car has a striaght 6 in it. I love the way it sounds, but I would never get away with it being that loud around here. The car also has killer acceleration like that compared to with the glass packs hooked up. Please excuse my squeaky steering colum. Just one of those things I haven't gotten around to yet. Also, it sounds like it's missfireing, but its really just the camera makeing the sound cut out like that. I guess it was to loud for it.
What is factory 6 exhaust? like 1 7/8? Try 2 1/4 with a matching muffler. A single flowmaster would probably come close without restricting it too bad.
Really depends on what kind of sound you're going for, glasspacks are of course loud, i've heard good things about the dynomax bullet (may be spelled different) mufflers, heard their like a combo between a glasspack/flowmaster, good deep sound, with a louder glasspack sound when revved up high Flowmasters actually restrict your exhaust, and series makes a big difference in sound as well, even between 40/50 series. If you want a nice/inexpensive muffler, look into Flowtech's, i knwo they have some affordable ones, and they also arent restrictive, and you wont sound just like everyone else with a 40 series flowmaster...
muffler my son has a 77 4 door 250. We just put 2 inch exhaust with dynamax turbo on it, sounds very nice deep and powerful but not overbearing.
Unfortunately a six will never sound like a V8. Way back I had split headers with glass packs and duals run all the way out the back on my 200. It sounded great......for a 6 cyl.
The Flowmasters aren't much of a restriction. Not my favorite sound for the most part, but the design is open. There is almost nothing there to restrict.
i have a 2.5 inch exhaust and dual flow master series 40 mufflers...mine sounds awesome...it is abit loud..but i think that is due to lack of sound deadening in the trunk... i want borla....i love their sound.....but it is a little pricey... if you want pure loud and sounds mean....go with glass packs...straight through..no restriction....and LOUD....hehe i like flowmasters sounds.....and you can go online to flowmaster.com and listen to some cars ...i think they have an older mustang in their sound files..
I have never heard a six cylinder engine, especially an inline six, sound very good on loud exhaust (Flows or glasspacks). Sounds, for the most part, like an elephant fart running down the road. I think 2 1/4" pipe, a good muffler, and it will be fine.
It's already got Glass packs on it, but its not loud enough for me. I want it almost to the point of being obnoxious. What can I say, I'm 17. I get these guys in there little Civics and such pulling up next to me all the time and revin' there engine like there bad. I want to rev mine and make everyone at the intersection turn and look. Gotta have a little fun. Thanks for the help guys.
I dunno. Flowmasters have no closings in the muffler, nothing but a little turbulence and a few angles. My glasspacks are a bit restrictive to blow air through when in my hand. I like the sound, but I'm on the fence as to my next muffler. For the little 6, the Flows would sound more like what he has now. I just don't like the drone @ 2000 rpms on a V8, and I don't really have room for two under my car.
when i first got my mav qith the 170 in it....i went to advnace auto parts and bought a purple colored glass pack..not sure of the name brand.....i just bolted it onto the existing pipe....it was pretty darn loud....i loved because i would down shift into second...turn off the ignition and wait a sec...then turn the ingition back on...BANG..instant backfire i dont recommend doing this in a closed muffler design and i take not liability for people blowing their muffler apart by doing the above mentioned proceedure... yes...i did blow apart a turbo muffler doing that ....thats why i went with a glass pack. have fun....isnt that what we are supposed to do ALL the time? !
I bet you looked pretty funny blowing into a muffler I've heard that flowmasters leave a bit more drone in the cab, whereas the flowtech mufflers dont, more sound is out the BACK...this from a guy whose run both
My buddy has Hooker Aero-Chambers coming off of Hooker headers with no crossover. His sounds like glasspacks. Mine has Aero-Chambers coming off of Hooker headers with an X-pipe. Mine sounds more like a flowmaster, but without the resonance that 5.0 cars have. Both are 302's, mine has late model 302 HO (351W) firing order, his has 302 firing order. Same size exhaust, same exhaust shop put them on. There is absolutely no comparison. His is way louder than mine. Seth
