I'm looking to add a bike rack to the Yellow Maverick .... Think this would work?

I'm thinking that a peice of 1/2 thick steel could be bolted to the existing holes that the big bumpers were bolted to. Then I could weld a drop down to it that would house a 1 1/2 inch receiver. It would all be covered by the smaller bumper rear valance. I would notch the valance below the license plate to allow the receiver and bike track to attach? It would't have to hold more than 100 lbs or so ...

Any comments? Who wants to build me one? :)

Dan, you have made several mods to this car, that at first I thought you were crazy, but they turned out very well. This one, I'm not so sure about. :hmmm: :)

Hide the hitch behind the license plate. Use a spring loaded drop down plate bracket. I think Blugene is your guy to build one.

Blugene .. where are you? :) If I flip the rear license plate down when hooking up a bike rack I don't think that would be legal would it?

I did a quick finger test behind the valance ... not sure if there is 1/2 inch clearance between the big bumper mounting surface and the rear valance to mount the plate ...

We did a hitch like that on a friends pickup. Then again he usually has a boat behind him and Missouri has both front and rear plates while Georgia only has rear plates. Would be neat though.

I think it would look fine with my plan ... here is a Photoshop of the finished hitch ...

    Been there, done that!

I tried that in the 10th grade. I got slapped! :D

The hitch I threw away off of my '73 bumper donor car
was chrome. It attached to the nearest to center bumper bolts
I believe, was sqared off around the license plate, had a flat bar
running behind & below the rear valence. Then it attached to the
frame rails. Is your exhaust going to be a problem for making
this work? I have often wondered if the receiver type hitches
can be made pointed down. Maybe it could be behind the valence.
An extra turn in the hitch would be needed, making it a little more
difficult for installing but it may be out of sight.

    that looks good Dan!

*for me that would open up a lot of comments from "friends"

"O, he put that on there so when the car breaks down he can still get to were he was going"

I think I have a hitch but I need to see if I did'nt thow any thing away. My car had one when I got it and when I took my fuel tank out recently, I took it off. The one I have has a 2" ball but I can try to work with it and see what I come up with. One problem is that the receiver is made from an odd size. I had to add a receiver to a trailer once and discovered I could'nt just use stock square tubing material. I can pick up something at Northern that would work though. I can see what I have and take a pic for you and you tell me if it's something you would like me to work on for you. I will be in Dallas and away from my shop till Saturday evening. Oh, it does bolt to the existing bumper bolts but I am trying to think of how it was bolted in the center, seems I remember some other bolts there also. Let me know...
Here I go, putting off that Mav grill again lol...

Funny you say that cause some one made a remark that I could'nt pull sh** with that hitch, less than a week later I rented a U Haul and loaded my Snap On tool box and all my equipment and was out of there. That was a momentus day for me, especialy cause it was the first time I had hooked up to it.That shop looked empty without my sh** in there LOL :burnout: .
But you know, I would'nt pull my car from that thing John
    :D :Handshake

i got a mirror at the junkyard here a while back and i saw the small bumper still on the rear of the car. i went around back and it had a hitch installed. i figured someone screwed up a small bumper. i bet it's still there.
