hey people. I just found a cool car In my area and I might buy it depending on the price and if the dude is even selling it (hope so!). It is a 60's mustang, probably 66 or 67. It has a 289 and is a three speed manual. cool!. It is red and has hood scoops but hood is open and didnt seem to want to close( its half closed actually) Had all glass, faded paint, gas pedal was stuck to the floor, and the interior was ok. The shifter seemed to go into all of the gears. Engine looked like it was in pretty good shape, but im pretty sure the car isnt working. Basically a project car. Anyone have an opinion of what this would be worth? I put this in technical because I was thinking of maybe swapping the 289 into the maverick (if the guy is even selling it) Anyhow, I dont hear much about 289 swaps, all I hear is about is 302 swaps. Any reason for this? Does a 289 suck? whats the difference between the engines. Is the 289 easier to install? harder? Any advice would be appreciated. thanks alot!
The last year for a 289 was 1968, the first year 302s were produced. Mavericks didn't come with a V8 until 71. They only made 289s for 6 or 7 years, they made 302s for 30 years. A 302 is just a 289 with a longer stroke, gives a little more torque. When I did my V8 swap into my Mav in 73 I put in a 289, ran it for over 15 years.
I would buy the mustang, leave the 289 in it, and start a new project (and probably have to join a 2nd forum ). If you need a bigger motor in your mav, go 302 or 351, with a roller cam...
yea thtas what I was thinking about . I might but depends on the price. hope he wants less than 2,000. (if he even wants to sell it) Dude has alot of cars, kinda like a mini junkyard, ill say about 20 or so cars. 2 60's mustangs, a 78 camaro and some old trucks, I think one is from the 30's any ideas on the price he would ask?
You call yourself a Ford guy and you can't tell the diffrence between a '66 and '67 Mustang? Come on now. More then a Maverick in the same condition. Seriously though, pic's would help. One of the main things that seems to affect the price of old Mustangs, no matter what mechanical condition they are in, is how good of shape the subframes and roof are in (rust). Pretty much every other piece of the body you can buy new.
If he has that many cars, they're probably his retirement plan and he thinks every one of them is worth its weight in gold. You might get lucky though. There was a guy close to my home town who had a red '66 vert stang and matching red '66 vert vette sitting on a hill in his front yard. He wanted an insane amount of money for both of them. Last I saw, both tops where gone, and so was most of the interior and the stang was just ROTTED all the way through. It was a shame really.
Duster, Let me know where they are. I'd be glad to help you figure out what to offer they guy. I'm in Houston also.
Shadow, you are one sneaky guy. Gonna snag that stang when Duster ain't looking? :evilsmile Naw, I know you wouldn't do that...
lol! I probably wont be able to buy it. Im always short on cash! anyhow its really close to my parents house. I dont know if the area is still Needville or Rosenberg. you take 59 and at an exit that leads to fm2218 and you basically take 2218 and then turn left on this street and go a little bit then turn left on another street. I dont know the name of the last two streets you turn on. If you want more DETAILED details pm me I can try to find th street names if you want. My cousins ATV (4 wheeler thingy) was messed up so my aunt knew this one guy that could fix it and well we took it but the dude wasnt there and I saw all the cars and checked them all out. I told my cousin that if they go before the weekend to ask the guy if he is selling it and how much he wants. If they go on the weekend that means I can go and Ill take the pics. That day I went my cell phone was out of battery so I couldnt take pictures By the way I dont remember calling myself a Ford dude!! (unless your talking about my email adress )
And where the hell would I put it? There's a Thunderbird in the garage, a Fairmont in the driveway and neither are running. I bring anything else home and the neighbors are going to revolt.
I might be able to make room in my garage... By the way, how is that thunderbird coming along...is that the one you showed pics of a couple months back, that you were working on with your dad?
it seems a little unnecessary to try to buy a classic mustang just because you want to put its motor in a maverick. I dont want to speak too soon, one time I bought a rusted out '76 Delta just because I wanted to put it 455 in my 85 cutlass. that car was only $250 thought. but for the kind of prices people are putting on mustangs, even the garbage, you could build your maverick a very nice small block.
yea thats true. if I do buy the stang i will not take the engine out then. Just keep it for a yard ornament ! j/k!!
That one was Dad's car. Mine is currently sitting there with dust all over it. Looks like a shell with a jungle gym inside. Now that I have some time (since the season is over) I need to get back to work on the poor thing. The cage structure is almost done. I have all the bars in place and tacked but need to final weld them. With this thing being a 25.2 legal chassis.....there's a bunch of bars to weld!!!!! Got a price on all the fiberglass I need for it yesterday. Got a hell of a deal on it too. $1500 for complete front end, hood, scoop, doors, and decklid. Still need to decide on ladder bars or four link so we can get the rear bars done. I've got too many projects.
