My first question is how much horsepower do you think my 302 will be?

The engine is a 1987 h.o. 302 with roller lifters. The engine came out of a Lincoln. The components I have are: speed demon 625 carb, weiand X-celerator intake, 2 inch carb spacer, f-303 cam, flowtech headers, underdrive pulleys, electric fan, and an electric fuel pump. The engine is going into a I6 1970 Maverick. It does not have power steering or power brakes. I have the conversion items such as the frame and motor mounts, and a crossmember. I was also wondering if a 3 inch exaust would be too little or too much back pressure for this set up.

Let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated.:tiphat:

I have no idea how much horsepower that will produce, but i am glad to welcome you the the Maverick/Comet Forums!

There's no such thing as "too little" back-pressure for an exhaust system. No engine "needs" back-pressure. The objective should be to achieve maximum velocity and plenty of flow. Bigger pipe reduces velocity, so the idea that "bigger is better" is nothing but a myth. Bigger is better only to a point, after which it hurts more than it helps. If you lose velocity, you lose power and performance. 3-inch dual exhausts are too big for a small V-8 application, and I don't care what anyone says to the contrary. The only thing 3-inch would achieve is making the system louder, and perhaps looking cool. It's not gonna make more horsepower. 3-inch pipe is also a lot more expensive, an unnecessary expense. 2-1/4" is plenty big for most performance small-block V-8 applications, and 2-1/2" for a "really built" motor...

    welcome to the board.

I agree with TL :yup: everything must work together to get optimum performance.

Horsepower would be hard to say...but I would guess around 250-275.. JMO

without Comet now just keeping in touch
I've been wanting to ask this question, about exaust flow, I used to have a Ramcharger and I did work on the exaust, everything else stock, 2 barrell carb 360 ?I liteerally installed a muffler and a short exaust pipe hardly anything after the muffler , and used larger pipe. After that was installed, there would be a popping noise.. not a back fire, but just a popping noise out of the exaust, after reving the motor, as it returned to idle. Yeah I know it isn't a Mav/Comet, but in general, is this because of better breathing exhaust but not better intake performance? I am thinking about an upgrade to the Comet, and am wondering if a larger pipe could cause this " popping" I am running a stock 1 barrel and thinking of running the set up described in another post "Check out the new exaust I installed on my 6 banger"

A lot of times, an "H" pipe or "X" pipe, will take care of the popping noise....
