Well technically Im not new but I havent been on here in over a year and I never formally introduced my self here. Well Thought i say hi. I own a nice 75 mav. Its my first and only car. Im a chick, so yeah so surprise there. A girl who likes to work on cars and owns a mav. I decided after a few years Im gonna work on it. I want to put in a 302 but have some questions. Right now I have the i6 250 in it. I messed up the driveline one day. While on the freeway the u-joint fell apart and the thing was dragging. I know I gotta get that fixed but will that driveline also work if I switch motors? It may sound like a stupid question to most but I was just wondering, cause the 302 is alot short then the i6. SO it made me think. Any help and advice would be much appreciated. Thanx and take care
hey welcome abord. sice you have a 250 the trans will also work with a mild 302 and the rear and drive shaft also work too. just run a search for v8 swap, it should give you a ton of posts to read over on the subject good luck
if it's the u joint that came apart, you can buy those at any auto parts store. there's quite a few gals on here, so don't hesitate to ask anything.
lol i replaced the u-joint already. and i wasnt sure about keeping my transmission, I reabuilt it last year but because its vaccum operated i dont want to mess with it any more. I was thinking of gettin an earlier c4. I rebuilt the motor too but Im really wanting power now. I was just wondering about the driveline because i dont want to get another one only to find out its not compatible or its to short. that would suck. I got a 302 roller motor for free so im half way to my dreams. Thanx for the kind words tho!!
i wouldnt let the vac line scare me, just plug it into the intake on the new engine and it'll work fine. get som motor mounts and headers and drop that mo fo in!
lol i will just gotta give it time, im use to workin on my i6, took me 3 months to rebuild my motor and tranny last year lol. im kind of attached to it. I need closer lol plus i think i would need a differnt bell housing for my c4 to bolt up to the 302 wouldnt i? Anyways i figure my b-day is in feb, mayb by then ill will give a present to myself. more hourse power under the hood of old betsy. maybe a hood scoop too just for fun.
the bell housing on a 250 actually bolts up to a 302 but the bell housing on other I6's does not so your kinda lucky. the radiator in a 250 is also the same as the ones in a v8 car. in a 200 or 170 maverick the hose inlets are smaller and become mismatched with the hose inlets on a 302 motor i actualy like the 250. im a little envious of your rebuilt one lol. theres a side of my that wants to kep and rebuild mine for the "diffrent" factor and theres also that need for speed that wants v8 power.
lol yeah well i like my 250 except it needed more work done to it. my exhaust manifold gasket is leaky a lil and i need a new carb. so y say if im gonna do all this work y not go all the way and get a different motor. 5 years with a i6 is plent of time to putt putt around town. i got an itchin, a need for speed. i dont know what ill do with the i6 tho. i have no other mavs. It only has 14k miles on it. ill figure it out soon. take cares!
but remember the V8 Air cars had 3 cores. weirdone - you should upgrade to one if your radiator ever goes bad. btw
i up dated to a 3 core "heavy duty" radiator a few years ago. so i think im still good but just for luck ill replace it anyways. But if you guys are right then all i gotta do is drop in my motor, get a vaccum setup for my transmission, fix my driveline, and i should be rolling. That sounds simple lol
you will also have to find the correct exhaust manifolds unless you buy headers and change out the frame mounts for the motor. there will b a few small isues with the electrical. you should have a small rubber hose comming out of the trans and goin into the intake. you just plug that into the intake on the new engine
