There are couple of reasons I can think of. One is that the horn relay may have gone bad. Another could be a blown fuse and yet another could be a bad connection on or to the horn it's self. There may a be a bad connection in the horn pad on the steering wheel. There is also a screw on the horn that determines how loud the horn blows. If turned in all the way, the horn will not blow. Any one of these will cause your horn to not work.
Someone correct me if I am wrong......but I don't think a maverick ever had a horn relay. If they do....I don't know where it is located. Where the horn is attached to the car serves as the ground. If this gets loose/dirty/rusty the horn will not work either.
I believe you are right , Craig. I was thinking about the 54' Ford pickup we have in the shop that has a non-functioning horn. In that case it is the horn relay that is bad. I've got to get out of that garage more often.
I never have found a horn relay on any of mine, my horn stopped working so I pulled it off buffed up the horn bracket and the firewall and bolted it back up, after that horn worked fine...
I have a box full of horns that do not work. I guess I should try turning that screw on the horn and see if that is the problem.
Once when mine stopped working and I knew it wasn't an electrical problem, I took that screw out, squirted in some WD40 and put the screw back in. That was about 20 years ago and it still works. As mentioned above, if the problem is electrical it's often a poor ground at the case. Have seen steering wheel horn buttons go bad. In early Mavs (not sure about later) the horn gets it's power through the headlight switch/circuit breakers so if your lights work that's probably not the problem.
thanks first off this is my 16 year old son's first car. 1972 comet w/302. while cleaning the steering wheel, the horn stopped working, he disassembled the cover on the wheel, and this came apart- the wiring inside the steering wheel. where can we get this assembly or is is fixable? or are there any other tips/options? we appreciate your help. we live in orange county, california. thanks joe & mathew
Welcome to the board. Very nice Comet! Sorry, can't help you with the horn problem. Mine didn't work either. I just ran new wires to mine and relocated the switch to the floor by the dimmer.
I've got a question... My horn is very very weak haha... so if i were to turn that screw you were talking about, would it be louder? If so, where exactly is it located? -Andrew
My horn and side blinkers don't work according to my chiltons manual it says there is a 15amp fuse that is "intigral with light switch" so is there a mini fuse box that is part of the light switch or what? I would like to get the horn working again the the turn signals would be nice to. any help would be greatly appreciated.
There are two auto-resetting circuit breakers built into the light switch. All of the lights and the horn get power through these breakers. Over time these internal breakers can become weak and not hold a load, then you have to replace the switch.
I found a part on the AutoZone web site SW132 "headlight switch" would that be the part I need to replace to fix my horn and turnsignal side markers? my headlights and everything the switch actually is ment to operate still works though. Thanks
That is the correct number. I would check the wiring connector on the column for the turn signal switch. This connection can effect the signals as well as the horn.
