I took my Maverick to a show this weekend where it was entered in the 1971 to 1980 open stock class. It was a beautiful day weather-wise and I met and talked to fellow Maverick owner jhossrock ( Joe). Always a pleasure to meet a new Maverick owner and swap tales about our cars. Later that afternoon I deceided to go take some more pictures of the other cars. I was standing near the front of my car adjusting my camera settings when two men walked came over and were looking my engine over. I heard the one guy comment on what a nice Maverick it was. The other guy ( who BTW was wearing a chevy shirt)sort of snorted and said " Yeah, but it doesn't belong in a stock class. These cars didn't come with V8's. They only came with 6 cylinders. They had to have put that motor in there." I looked at the guy and said "Excuse me, the car is stock and the 302 came in the car from the factory. Ford did offer the 302 for the Mavericks and this is one of them." The guy said, " No way. I have only ever seen 6 cylinders in these cars." I told him I had the original window sticker and owners manual to prove it and the jerk said " Yeah, right" and he and his buddy walked away. I replied " Whatever man, be a jackass." Well, that jerk must have gone off to tell all his chevy buddies about it because a while later someone else came up and asked me if the 302 was the stock engine in a Maverick.( He was wearing the same shirt as the "jerk". At least this time the guy actually looked at the window sticker and commented on the fact that he learned something that day and left saying what a nice car it was. I felt pretty good about that, but other jerk just pi**ed me off. Except for him, we had a great time. Has this ever happened to anyone else here who has a V8 in their Mavericks or Comets?

All the time. Most times I get, "What'd you have to do to get that in there?" I just tell them it came that way from the factory. You're not alone.

Did we win? Nope. It was a chevy and dodge lovers pick all the way. The thing is, I don't go to the shows expecting to win. I love showing the car simply because it is NOT a chevy. It's something most people don't expect to see and most people I have met usually have something good to say about it. I know there are some folks out there who will not accept the car because it is a Ford, but you know what? Screw 'em! I like the Maverick and that's the only thing that matters.:D

I could just picture you there, Jean, with steam blowing out of your ears!

Maybe the IQ (idiot quotent) is a bit lower in this side of the state in reference to things Ford. Out of all the comments and questions I've gotten about the powerplant, many know that a 302 was available and those that didn't, don't seem surprised that there was. I've never gotten an argument that there ever was a 302 available.

    Just consider the source.:slap:

Just remember what my Dad always told me:

People do not have the power to bother you as much as you have the power to let them.

My Dad was a smart guy. I just laugh at people like that. It usually will tick them off.

I`ve heard the same thing a thousand times about how Mavericks never came with V-8`s
in them. I`ve had people argue that my 302 wasn`t a 302 "No way that big `ol thing is a 302" ... because of the Tunnel ram.

I also have a brother in law who says he KNOWS that Mavericks and Comets could be bought new with a 351w and a 4 speed from the factory because His "All original `74 Comet GT Had a 4 barrel 351w with a 4 speed in it.":slap:

    Ya know,
I have nothing against Chevys or any other American make, but I do have something against those idiots who think their Chevy is somehow better than any other make in the world, as if no other car manufacturer knows how to build a good car or a powerful engine. Fools like that are a waste of oxygen. It's even worse that a "Chevy guy", who obviously couldn't know very much about Fords argues with you on the fact that these cars came from the factory with V-8s. As if a Chevy freak knows more about Fords than someone who's a Ford enthusiast, owns one, and has done plenty of research on it. Pathetic!...

Jean, I been there. Many think that indeed Ford only put 6 bangers in these cars. Maybe that is why I have surprised people at traffic lights.
