Okay, stock 1972 302 carb. I am just about fed up with it. The automatic choke is fubared. This manual choke is a huge pita and not working with a durn. whens its cold it just doesnt start like it should and then dont run good till it gets good and warm. Its got the lean surge you all talk about while cruising, some times it runs a little rough through the mid rpms, usually after you drive it and it sits a little while, it usually has to have just right amount of pedal and usually more cranking than i think nessecary, and if you dont do it just it gets even harder to start. basically i think i am down to changeing the carb to some thing else. I hate to spend that kind of money, but i want this thing to start good and run decent. So what options do i have for replacing stock carbs??? I have no clue in htis area. My last post one said to get a rebuilt carb for a 69 mustang with the 302? But i wonder whether or not a rebuilt would work good? They are rebuilt for a reason?? so basically what would you do in situation like this? I would need the whole choke assembly, housing and all. Then sounds like i need jets? Then who knows what else the carb might need. I really want this thing to run good and be proud of the way it runs.. So.... anybody?? i am lost on how to handle this... later chris
sounds like a good time to go to 4 barrel thats just me , but i think most auto parts stores can get you a reman 2 barrel carb
Old cars need to warm up a bit, is the heat riser connected to the air breather? is the flapper operating? The choke isn't the only thing. I would think that sonce you car sat, you may have a gummed up carb, find a shop the still repairs them and take it there, or find a mechanic thats been around for more than 20 years. You could also have some rust in the fuel line, or the pick-up on your sending unit could be plugged in the tank.
Swap out to an Edelbrock 600. No maintenance needed. Just have to swap out the intake (unless you cheat and use one of those 2bbl-to-4bbl spacers...not sure how well they work). Personally, I would never spend the time or money to work on a stock (or any other) 2bbl carb. It is just as cheap and time efficient to slap on a Performer 289, or Torker 289 and put on a $250 Edelbrock carb.
speaking of the flapper thing in the extension. I have tried it with the heat tube and and extension in place and tried it with out the extension and heat tube. Currently i have the estension and heat tube off trying to figure out how the flapper valve is suppose to work. I will put it back on tommorow and see if it makes any differnce, but how does that thing work? seems to take forever for it to open. It seems to open after a good long drive. Is that how it is suppose to work? Does it have to get really hot to work? Is it suppose to stay closed more than open? Does it really make a difference in the way it runs when it is cold??? this is all new to me, so i am learning as i go.. Thanks for the help!! oh yea, i dont think it is fuel supply cause when you punch it runin down the road it pulls strong, could be some gum though? And say when it is 40 degrees out and the motor is stone cold, how long should you run it with partial choke to warm it up? I have the manual choke now so not sure how long to let it fast idle with partial choke? i dont want want to fubar the plugs or anything, so how long should ya run it like that to warm it up? sorry for all the questions!! later!! chris
Get a rebuilt carb for a 1969 302 bbl mustang. It will bolt on and you will have a working choke, the surge will be gone, startability, and drivability will be back.
