ok this is a 72 302 with the stock 2100 carb. I need some parts. first two of three screws that hold the thermostat spring housing on are broke off. second i broke one tang off the piece that the spring engages. Thirdly even before i started it did not work good, the index mark was turned way past lean, and it was taking forever to disengage the high idle, and sometimes stuck. I tried one of those parts store manual choke kits, and i gave up, it was complete junk and would not work. So what are my options for fixing this? Can i buy a new housing with all the guts? Or do i have to go used? Of can i convert to an electric choke? And on a different note, inside the housing there is what looks like a bore some kind of piston might fit in, there is a suction on it when it was running, and one of my digrams show a choke piston assembly, should i have this? Or did some have this and some not? But i really need to know how to fix this?? I need my choke.. Any ideas??

    later!! chris

    Chris,
You are going to have to get the parts you need from donor carbs. That bore that looks like it should have a piston in it - should have one. Its is the choke pull off and that explains why it takes so long to come off high idle. I would suggest that you get a rebuilt carb for a 1968 - 1970 302. Get one for a 1969 mustang, 302, automatic. That way it will be jetted properly for a non-emission car. It will be easier to tune and run better than the carb for a 1972. Ford leaned those carbs out to run lean and they usually have a cruise surge between 50 and 70 that makes them hard to drive. Use your carb for a core if necessary but if no core is needed then keep it for parts or find the parts you need (plus some jets that are two sizes larger) and keep it for a spare.
