I have a 76 4 door with a 302 that has given me a problem. I went to the store the other day and my idle seemed a bit high at the stop sign. Got to the store and checked the carb, every thing looked fine. Started up fine but as soon as i give it throttle it sticks open a bit. Got home shut engine off opened hood and checked, every thing looks fine. Start engine and it's fine, blip throttle and it's stuck again. I can push the throttle back down to a nice easy idle.I have spent hours of wd-40 and many more options. I only drive it every couple of weeks, but now i am scared it might do it even worse. Can any one help?

Howdy. I had the same problem, and it turned out to be the cable linkage. start car and then feather gas until idle stays higher than normal. shut off engine BUT do not touch any linkage. Lossen screw that holds cable to the bracket on the backside of carb and at the same time watch what throttle linkage does. If it returns to the proper location for a smooth idle then this is your problem. If not then tighten screw again and start car. feather carb again until it has a faster than normal idle.Dont touch throttle linkage and leave engine on this fast idle. With engine- on faster than normal idle-- use a large pair of pliers and bend cable bracket towards radiator a small bit and the engine idle should slow down. This bracket just needs a little tweeking to be in the rite location. This solved my faster than normal idle. If you bend bracket more than 1/4in and the problem has NOT been fixed then it might be some where else. This solved my problem(y)

It might also be the curb idle solenoid adjustment - I adjusted mine to fit my driving and it idles a lot lower now but doesn't stall.

I first thought solenoid but it gave no change. The throttle spring is there. I will give all that a try and see what happens. If it keeps it up i might just buy another carb. I found one cheap this morning. Thanks all of you, it makes me glad to find people who know how to help. Better than an auto parts guy hands down.
