I dug through my big box of old keys and can't find any extra keys for the Maverick. My existing keys are the originals and very worn. They work good but I'm worried in the event I loose them. I'm sure a locksmith could trace these, but they look really worn. Wondering about changing to a new cylinder. Any suggestions on the quality of replacements?
If you pull the door locks one(prob passenger side) will usually have the factory code number for the key, a locksmith can make you new key(s) from that number... I repined my ign & doors to a new set of keys I had(the matching lock was long gone, still had unsed keys), they'll out last me... Going to change the trunk as well but I have a good used cylinder with keys for it... No idea about quality of replacement cylinders these days...
But if the orig keys are badly worn that procedure can be hit or miss(yes I understand how measuring works, done it a few times myself)...
I lost the keys to a "72 I had and the locksmith came out and made me a set just using the door/trunk locks... Hagerty ...picked up the bill...
I'll be pulling the door lock cylinders and outside door handles off for priming. I'll check for codes. I did buy a bunch of Ford key blanks off of Ebay awhile back. I'd rather have Ford keys than plain locksmith blanks.
I cut Ford keys at work with the factory key codes on occasion. http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/keycode.html The machine that cuts them has 5 different depth settings, and with 5 cuts per key per side. I measured the 5 different cuts (double sided) with my calipers, for a reference if I needed to copy a worn key. It shouldn't be a problem for someone with key cutting experience.
