Stock block 302's can be stroked to 347. Stock block 351w can go to 408. I'm sure they can go a little further but this is probably the most for a long life engine. Other than that you need to make major mods, Like a MII front end then the sky is the limit. Or $$$
Once you install a Mustang II style suspension just about anything will fit. With any engine you will need the proper oil pan for clearance. I believe you may also run into clearance issues with the master cylinder.
For 460 install with a mustang II front.......... Use a Fox Mustang swap oil pan and pick-up tube. Master cylinder clearance is really only an issue with the tall Motorsport valve covers. Unless you are using a stud girdle, stock valve covers will clear roller rockers up to around .650 valve lift. I don't know of any headers that work. I built my own. Photos are in my gallery of the engine on the stand with the headers installed. There was someone on here at one time that was mocking-up a set of re-flanged 67-68 Camaro headers to use with stock exhaust port 460 heads to get a 2" primary tube. I don't recall seeing a finished product. They probably have a good chance at bolting straight in with TFS or BT heads and a motor plate. If you use a C4 behind the 460 it fits in the stock trans mount. Cleaver
Well, glad I stumbled onto this thread before I started my own. I'm interested in a big block swap too. How hard is the front end swap? I bought my Comet as a toy, not a commuter so I have been looking to 460 and bigger. What kind of budget should I be looking at to do the front end swap? Sorry. I'm not trying to thread jack, just figured it would be easier to add to instead of starting a new one. Thanks.
The Mustang 2 front end swap is easiest with a prefabbed kit from a rod shop. That way you get everything ready to drop in. You can get a bare bones kit, or a 'deluxe' kit, so price varies greatly. Also, the high and low end kits from some companies are much more expensive than the same high or low end kits from another supplier. So shop around! Probably looking at $2k or better, depending on who's kit you use and which options you get. That doesn't include installation. You do that yourself, or pay someone to do it. Then you have plenty of room for your 460... or better yet, your stroked 460. Get what they call a "super bell" from a 351m/400, in order to put a C4 behind the 460. Have the tranny built very well so it will hold up. That will save you from having to do several other mods to get a C6 to fit your car. Edit: I wonder... The Fox body oil pan is what you use when you have this front end, so Fox headers just might fit. They make Fox headers for several different v8s, 302, 351w, 351c, and 460. Should be able to find a used set to try. Either that, or several companies sell the oil pan and headers as a kit, but that is an expensive way to experiment with header fitment. Just a thought. Used headers are usually cheap, and Fox headers would be easy to resell if they didn't work.
