Some consider them tolerable for street use. They tend to make your tires chirp around corners(especially when theres a cop behind you)They can make your back end come around on you in the rain (if yor not careful)and they tend to be hard on driveline parts on a car that turns corners. Some swear by em some say dont use em.I dont like em for street use.Ask scooper he has one in his mav.
Did someone call me? I like the spool, but also know that it can get out of hand on turns, especially if the roads are wet. My grandmother could drive the spooled car all the time and never be in any trouble. The way I drive it, I have to remember to ease off it on turns or the rear end could end up beside me. I will be pulling the rear and axles out in the next week or two to see if I have any twist in them. I put a score mark along each axle with a straight edge and figured I would drive it a couple years/couple thousand miles and pull the axles to make sure they are staying straight. Let you know what I find, if anything. Currently have about 3000 miles on the spool, and no visible problems yet. Other than that, they sound like you are driving over gravel on some sharp slow turns. This is what they call "chirping". Newer tires with more rubber will not do it as much. My old bald tires did it more, and I bet my slicks will too.
Mini spools aren't that great for Drag racing either. You have to install them into a stock open case.I actually bent the hardened pin in mine along with a broken axle and a cracked case on a launch at the track.Damn near took out the christmas tree!!! Also if you have plain radial tires they are alot more forgiving than a soft compound street/strip type tire which i had when all hell broke loose. If i was spening the cash on a 450 hp engine i would definately want the rest of the drivetrain to be able to hold it. JMO. Scott your slicks shoulden't make any noise because of the soft compound.Kind of like a pencil eraser on asphalt, they will scrub more than anything.
Derek...Just got my new Hot Rod and this question arose, and same answer you gave. I have never heard of, or thought about, the pin, and that is why they recommend against it, unless used "on circle track with wheel stagger"...what the heck is "wheel stagger"?
different size tires. Putting smaller tires on the left side and bigger on the right....helps its to turn more better.... think of the scientific formula of that thing going in a cirlce..... You would be amazed....atleast I was, on how different two tires that are the "same size" are actually not the same size. I run circle track and we must run the "same size" tire on all 4. I bought 8 brand new SUMITOMO's 195/60/15 and they measured anywhere from 76" to 76 7/8" that is legal stagger in a stock class
in my class....all I have to do is run the same size tires on all 4. Its up to me to measure and figure out which ones are bigger/smaller diameter. In many other forms of race (specially dirt) they can legally run different size tires, how big a difference they can run (if any) is unknown to me.
Cool, thanks, and this thread can proceed as it was before I interrupted...let me try to get rid of this jack...
