Hello everyone. I have found a '74 2 door Maverick from en elderly couple. They say that they bought it new with a 302. Car is a hard top, from a quick walk around when they said they weren't interested in selling it, the body looks good except for one dent due to a tree limb. Well they called me and said they would sell it... for $2,000. Motor runs, but you know that it will be yanked and rebuilt for something a little better since my plan is to make a street hot rod out of it. I think 2K is about $1,500 too much... Anyone care to comment on a fair price for the car?
It all depends on how bad you want it. I paid $4000. for one of the Mavs I have and I'll bet some people would have thought I was crazy for paying that much for the car I bought, but I wanted it and I bought it. I don't regret it at all. Now I have 3 Mavs and I love everyone of them. Just remember these cars are getting more rare every day. Hope this helps! Mike
If the body and interior is in good shape and the car runs and drives good, I think 2000 sounds fine. I would try to get them down to 1500.
If the body is rust free, the interior is intact and in good shape, and the mechanicals are good, i.e., the car starts, runs, and stops, it is probably worth at least $2,000 or more. The key is what are you willing to pay and what are they willing to accept. Mavericks in rough, non-running shape are going for $500.
Ditto everything said so far! Rust is the key to value on any Maverick, plus a bonus if it is a real Grabber and a bonus bonus if it is a Sprint ('72) or a Stallion ('76).
It depends on how long you can wait for a deal, how deep you are willing to dig, and what kind of shape you want the car to be in. It sounds like you have hit the second layer of the car market. The one just below dealers and ebay. Trust me, there are many more layers where cars get cheaper, it all just depends on you. If you wait and dig, probably travel a little too, you will find cars in great shape for less money... Without patience though, you will pay. Sounds high to me, especially since you will essentially be gutting and restomodding the car. Digging will find you a better deal, but you might have to wait, travel, and/or get a good body with no engine. Good luck Dave
Without more information pics, etc., it's hard to say for sure, but going on your description for a running 302 2 door Maverick, and if it is fairly rust free it doesn't sound too bad, maybe $1,500.00, but I would say $500.00 is way too low, unless it is nonrunning or a has a lot of rust etc. You didn't mention the interior etc.? Has it been garage kept etc? These cars are starting to go for more than they did just a few years ago, but sometimes people are at the right place at the right time, and come up with a great buy! Just my . Good luck!!!
Keep in mind the value of the car is also driven by the value of the parts on the car. It unfortunate but there are a lot of cars that can be saved but are parted because of what someone can sell the parts for. A couple of dents are not a problem. Major damage and rust is what effects the value. If the car is rust free and has few mechanical defects and has a decent interior it is close to the $2000 price.
You don't say if you inspected it for rust... If the car has no rust, it is a better deal than I first suggested. If it has rust... then it gets iffy. Regardless, NEVER offer to pay what they first ask. It never hurts to offer a grand then meet them in the middle for 1500 when they balk at your first offer. When it's over, you got it for 1500 like you wanted. Offer them 1500 as your counter offer now, you will likely end up around 1750, unless they just roll over, at which point you will be wishing you offered a grand to start. Dave
Again, thanks everyone. After reading some of the additional post, here's some additional comments on my part. The car hasn't been garage kept; it's been exposed to the weather and under a oak tree ever since I've seen it at the house. Didn't have a chance to do a good look over for rust, etc. - but probably will before telling them yeah or neah. The interior is vinyl and is cracked. Dash pad about the same. Door panels (as beast I can remember) are fair. The car is a basic Maverick with a carb'd 302, nothing more. BTW, is it true the wheelbase is different between a regular Mav and a Grabber? It will need minor bodywork (convert to small bumper) & new paint, interior, engine overhaul. Basically it's a long term project car.
Wheelbase is the same on a Grabber and 2 door. Make sure you check the cowl area for rust. This is one area that will drop the value of even a nice looking Maverick quickly!
