Hey all, had a little time today and worked on the ol 73 302 mav, (The Forgotten Project) Ajusted the points a bit, yes I know points suck and I plan on changing them over. I also played with the carb a bit, seemed like it was getting to much fuel before. Now the car is MUCH better on the low and mid end but the high end seems like a cylinder is missing. By high end I mean pedal to the floor near the end of the gear, engine screaming, high end. Also when cruising at a constant speed the engine seems to jerk a bit, causing a less than smooth ride, whereas before it was smooth. Would this be caused by my less then professional work on the points (I really dont know much about points :smash: ) or my (Let's turn these and hope for the best :slap: ) carb work. The car is a Automatic 73 Mav with a 302 running a Edelbrock 4 barrel (no idea on Cfm) and duels through cherry bombs off the manifolds. I also sprung for the luxury exhaust leak (y) On a side note I still cant spin the tires from a dead stop, With a setup like this I should be able to right? I'm thinking about just taking it to a shop and having them tune it for the high altitude, 6000 feet. I have a timing gun but quickly realized I suck at using it and have since turned it into a Raygun to play with. :bananaman

Yes I'm young and stupid, can you tell? :D

Rudy, those screws are for the idle mixture and don't really affect cruise or wide open throttle.
So exactly what did you do to the points?
You'll need to get your ray gun back into timing light mode if you want to make that car run right. You should be able to spin the tires a bit, but don't expect to do any wheelies.

I have a 302 and a edlebrock 289 preformer intake, 390cfm 4 barrel holley with vacume secondaries, putting that power to the wheels with a c4 with a shift kit. I've had my carb tuned by a professional, he adjusted the timing, points, checked plugs, adjusted the choke everything. I do have wide tires on the rear 265 wide, 60, 15, mounted to alloy wheels. So its a big tread and it makes it hard to spin from a stop, but they'll spin a bit, 2nd and 3rd give a nice bark. Prefect i'd say.

rudy...not always but often, a miss at high rpm is either rotor, cap, plugs or plug wires. as far as the points go, get a dwell meter. best way to set points. i had a miss like you were saying and it was plug wires. or save some hassle and go electronic. if you are on some kind of budget, get the pertronix. i have them in both my mavs and love them! there are plenty of better systems out there but this one is an easy drop in. let us know how things go. best of luck.
