I found this hi-res photo of the Ford Maverick Runabout (Concept Car) ,while browsing Flickr. All rights reserved by owner of the color photo, "Boss Mustang", so I only active-linked/embedded it in this post.

I also posted the two black and white photos that were already circulating around below. One is from the photo archives here.

I also reposted some info that I found on an old post, from Dan Hines, that he posted back in 2004. What is interesting is that Dan describes the 2-tone color of the car in his writeup, and I'm not sure if the photo (that used to be in his post) was the same black and white photos that I pasted further below.

From a 2004 post by Dan Hines:
"Not sure if anyone has ever posted the back end of the Maverick Runabout showcar ... pretty hideous! Here is the description of the car:
Combining a sport look with some of the lines of the classic cars of the 1920's and '30's the Ford Runabaout show car. This is a specially designed Maverick open four-seater with a rear body design reminiscent of the roadsters of the Roaring Twenites. This"bobtail" rear design has externally mounted taillights and a trunk with attaching restraining straps. The spoke design of the wire wheels is a throwback to such old-time great cars as the Stutz Bearcat and Jordan Playboy.
More modern features included a down-slopping front spoiler mounted below the bumper, a blackout egg crate grille, dual racing mirrors, and an outside tachometer mounted on the hood. Giving an additional touch is the exposed exhaust pipes, housed in a perforated chrome heat shiled and mounted along the rocker panel beneath the door on the passenger side. The color scheme is a dual one: an avocado green hood contrasting with a brilliant yelow body tone."

I have a official Ford press photo of it, in my collection, it's stamped "Ford Motor Company" on the back.

Those tail lights look like sport mirrors turned side ways. You can tell the 70's were the days of drugs, cause who ever designed that hideous thing had to be on something!

Never has a car looked so amazing from the front, and so hideous from behind.

    That's awesome Dave!

The least you could do is tease us with a few shots of your collection...I bet you have some pretty cool stuff. :yippee:

On the Runabout...I can't tell what type of shifter mechanism it is equipped with. Maybe you guys that are attending the Roundup Nationals in Dearborn can do some investigating on more of these mysteries of the Mavs and Comets.

It is possible that my summer schedule will allow me to stop by the Roundup this year. That would be great!

That rear end looks like one on that Excalibur kit car they came out with about that time. The front they got right.

Probably was crushed after it made the show circuit. Most factory show cars are destroyed due to the liability issues, but a few are somehow saved.

that must be where they came up with "junk in the trunk", but definitely not the good kind! that is the most hideous rear I have ever seen.:vomito:

Notice any similarities (other than being ugly) between the "Runabout" (aka roadster) and the roadster replicas that were popular in the early 70's?
