I Just Purchased A 72 Maverick Grabber While In Alabama And Was Looking For A Website And Look What I Found. Seems There Is A Lot More Interest In These Cars Than I Would Have Thought. First Of All Let Me Tell You My Story. I Had A 70 Buick Skylark With A 455 That Ran 7's In The 1/8th That I Had Been Building On For The Last 3 Years. Due To Health Reasons, I Had To Sell It For Bills. I Found A Guy In Alabama Who Wanted It And Reluctantly Took It Down There. On The Way Down, We Spotted A White Grabber For Sale. The Sign Said $3500 And The Car Appeared Fairly Straight. The Lady Said That The Motor Was Original As Well As All The Drivetrain. Car Smoked A Little And She Said It Had Been Sitting For 3 Months With A Few Tire-kickers But No Offers. I Told Her That I Would Think About It And Took Her Number. After Dropping Off The Buick, All I Could Think About Was That Maverick And Decided To Go Back By And See If It Was Still There. We Showed Up At 10 P.m. And I Offered Her $2000 For It. She Agreed And We Put It On The Trailer And Came Home. After Driving It, I Found A Bad Driver's Side Axle Bearing And No Working Power Steering. I Replaced The Bearing And Am Working On The Steering Problem And Discovered That I Had A Very Nice Car On My Hands. It Has No Rust Other Than A Little On The Drivers Door, Probably From Poor Surface Prep On The Paint Job, And No Bondo. Interior Only Needs Seat Covers As Everything Else Is Perfect. What I Need To Know Is, Is This A Rare Car Worth Restoring? I Really Want To Build The Motor Into A 450 Horse Nitrous Motor And Take It To The Track For A Little Bracket Racing. As A Muscle Car Nut, I Still Can't See Cutting Up A Classic For A Race Car So I Guess I'm Secretly Hoping This Is Just One Of A Bunch Of Mass Produced Cars And Can Get On With My Ambitions. Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks And Hope To Get To Know Ya'll Soon, Andrew
Where in Missouri are you? As you can see from this forum the Mavericks / Comets have a nice following but nothing like the Mustang crowd. They are gaining in popularity thus the prices are going up. Lots of them have made great race cars over the years. Sounds like you found a gem. Post some pictures when you get a chance.
well andrew, the good news and the bad news. sounds like you got a pretty nice car there. grabbers are not getting any easier to find. however the grabber is basically an add on package. mostly stripes, hood, blackout package, etc. i have a 71 grabber, runs mid 7's with a 308 in it. if i had it to do over again i would build a nice street machine with it and buy another maverick for the race car. the more you get into these neat little cars, the more you appreciate the different models. you can go to the gallery and look at some of the members cars there. also there a post about 10 days ago about roundup pictures. one of the first few posts link you to the maverick drag pictures at windy hollow dragway where a lot of us ran on july 27th. welcome to the board.
quit drumming up business allan. here's the links to the roundup pictures http://www.windyhollowdragway.com/gallery_mavericks.htm and http://www.foglefoto.com/list.php?exhibition=35
Gee thanks Don, Gotta do something we have like 12 people in Missouri and only 4 have entered. Looks like you need to do the same in Arizona.
welcome to the board. Great story and it sounds like you have a nice car. I think you can make a nice racer out of it and not cut it up at the same time. Good luck and keep us posted...and YES we like pictures!!!!!
I guess I'm too stoopid to post pics. I'll e-mail them to somebody if they can figure out how to do it. I live just west of Cape Girardeau, 120 miles south of St. Louis on I-55.
Howdy and While these cars are great little cars and gaining in popularity, they are in no league equal to Shelby's and such when it comes to collect-ability. Modified ones are actually worth more than stock ones. Have a blast!!
