Hey everyone, I'm new here. I don't own a maverick/comet yet, but they are heavy in my family/friend group so ill prolly end up with one. My moms b/f has a 71 comet that he rebuilt totally himself (With 18.5" tub rear wheels O_O...so awesome for burnouts) and he owns his own garage and his secretary just bought a 70 maverick grabber. both awesome cars. right now I own a Porsche and it's really fun, but it's not as quick in the straights as these are...

    EDIT:
I also wanted to know any prices for a good running comet, around the 1970 age? V-8 pref, in good body condition?

I would think a rust free V8 Comet would have a fair market value of $3,000. A rust free Comet GT more like $5000 - $6000 ... It all depends what the current owner thinks it's worth. Also .. Generally ... the bigger the bumper the less the price. An almost perfect rust Free V8/3-Spd 74 Maverick didn't even get any bids with a no reserve $3,000 starting bid price - I'm sure if it were a small bumper car it would have gone a bit higher than that no problem. If my garage wasn't already filled with 2 rust-free Mavericks I would definitely snapped that one up!

    Why are smaller bumpers better?

Most people feel the cars are more aesthetically appealing with the small bumpers - I happen to be one of them that feel this way. With a MIG welder, a weekends worth of work and all the right parts the large bumper cars can be converted to small bumpers. Other than some slight interior differences (armrests and glove box) all year Mavericks and Comets are basically identical. It's just a Maverick phenomena that sets the value higher on small bumper cars. Also the Small bumper Grabbers are way better looking that the large bumper versions. They had a snorkeled hood and rear spoiler - which the large bumpered Grabbers didn't have.

Welcome aboard. What part of Pa are you in?

He's right that a lot of us like the small bumper models because of the appearance. Bottom line is what you want. Mavs are hard to find here in the 'rust belt' in anything but parts. Mine are from Ohio and Texas and the Ohio one took a lot of work to get presentable.

Many Mavs come up for sale right here on the board. We'll help you to decide if any particular car is worth the price depending on how much you want to invest and how much work you can do by yourself.

For most people that want a truly rust free car ... a road trip or car transporter fee is a given ... Good luck with your search ...

Your not far from Harry's U-pull-it or Carlisle so you have good parts resources ...

Hello and Welcome to the board Awoir, About the bumpers it all comes down to what you want, If you want the bumpers to give you some protection get a 74-77 Maverick, Want small bumpers that offer good style but not much protection get a 70-72 Maverick, or want some style and a some more protection than the 70-72 get a 73 Maverick. As stated above people have their own personal tastes and opinions, like dmhines said a 70-72 Grabber looks better to him than a 73 or 74-77 because of the bumpers and scooped hood. As you can see I have a different opinion and like the the 73 Grabber with it's bumpers stock hood with clean lines. So do you have an idea now of what you want?

P.S. I hope this post didn't offend anyone.

Hi Awoir and welcome to the board. Good to have another Maverick nut from Pa. on the board. The bumper issue is really a matter of personal taste. The smaller bumpers give the car a much sportier look than the big ones do, and they weigh a heck of a lot less. The front and rear bumper reinforcements add about 75 pounds more to the front and rear of the cars. My 77' and 76' Mavericks both have the big bumpers and I really have no intention of changing them over for one simple reason: Deer. This is big time deer country were I live and I have seen what a deer can do to a small bumpered Maverick. It's not pretty.:( But then, I have also seen what a good size bear can do to a car and it doesn't matter what size bumper you have in that case.
