Recently purchased 1972 Maverick after selling my Harley last fall. While searching Craiglist came across a post for my Maverick out of Aurora IL. Called the owner up on December 31,2010 and requested if he could send me some photos. when I asked for some additional photos he told me that he had someone coming to look at it on the 1st of Jan. I said ok send them to me and if he sold it just to let me know. I had to work the holiday weekend so I couldn't go take a look. Well, Sunday morning came no pictures and no call so I figured it was sold. While driving home from work I get the e-mail with photos attached. When I get home I take a look at the pictures. It was one of those could it be good to be true kind of things. I call the owner up and ask him for some details on the car. He said he has owned it since 2003 and was wanted the car to go to someone who will enjoy the car as much as he did. I informed the owner I would be there around 4 or 4:30 PM the next day. So, on Jan 3, 2011 my Bud Jim and I go to Aurora to check it out. Needless to say we were late due to traffic and pulling a dolly. When we get there he was not there and I couldn't get him on the phone. He then calls me back a few minutes later and said he figured I wasn't coming since it was late. I told him I know the feeling after being stood up numerous times trying to sell my Sportster for over 3 years. He said he was at his girlfriend's and he could be back in 15 minutes. When he arrived and opened the garage it was being stored in I was surprised. The condition of this car was better than in the pictures. The owner purchased the Maverick from a local classic car dealer in 2003 when he was a Jr in High School. I was impressed with the condition and I knew when it fired up and the 302 thundered I was taking it home. Jim and I took it for a test drive and were again suprised. It does need a little updating drives like a 39 year old car, but it was a complete car. When we returned I asked why he was selling. He said he purchased a bike and he didn't drive it too much last year. I asked him what kind of bike. Would you believe he had a H-D Sportster in his garage. I asked what happened to the guy who was looking at it the other day. He said the guy showed up with his wife and liked it. He said the guy was talking with his wife about putting a little work into it and flipping the car for more money. I said really, what happened? He said his wife said NO... Ha Ha Ha. His loss was my gain. Well, we agreed on a price and Jim and I towed the Maverick home. That guy should have known that his wife would of said no, but a friend will have a tow dolly to get it home. I was so glad it rained several days before so all the salt was off the roads. When we got home I started it to get it off the tow dolly the first one to hop in the passenger seat was my 14 year old son, he wanted a ride even if it just to put it in the garage til spring. I'll be looking forward to communicating with everyone and tapping the knowledge that is available here. Sorry so long winded, pictures coming soon in the condition purchased.
Welcome to the board. Sounds like you got a good car. Mavericks are fun, but so are bikes. I've got an 07 Goldwing.
