Hello, my father just picked up a 73 Comet GT and I was wondering just how rare of a car it is. I stumbled on to your forum site and was hoping to get some feedback. The body is pretty tough due to years of rust on the fender extensions, rear quarters, drivers door, and rockers. However, the rest of the car is realitively clean. The glass, seats, door panels, chrome trim, bumpers, light, etc. are in decent shape. I was wondering if it is worth doing resto and how hard is it to get replacement panels. Some of the options are: factory air 302 - (dead) 3 speed auto bucket seats 5 bolt sloted aluminum mags shaker hood GT stripes sport mirrors I posted some old pix of when we bought it for your viewing pleasure.
Welcome to the board! Nice car. Doesn't look too bad from what's visible in the pics. The GT's are somewhat rare, so it should be worth the effort to restore as long as frame rails, torque boxes, floor pans aren't too bad. BTW there's a mini-meet being held in B.C. this month. You should check it out. Here's the thread: http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=15316&highlight=vancouver+mini-meet
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Makes me cold just looking at those. Howdy and Nice car though. The scoop is the standard scoop on the GTs. Just for information purposes, a shaker scoop is one that was bolted directly to the top of the air cleaner. They move with engine movement.
to the board. Yes, they are somewhat rare. Looks like you got a good one. Would be worth fixing up, if everything is as Mavaholic says. I have a yellow 73 GT. And a gold 73 GT clone. I say go for it....
Hello and welcome to the board. We don't have stats on production of these cars. I believe 1973 is the cutoff for production stats from Kevin Marti. http://www.martiauto.com/ The forged aluminum wheels were a first for '73 Comets and Mavericks. They are pretty popular on the GT and Grabber cars for those years. The bucket seats were standard on GT's and optional on Grabbers. factory air -this was an option, you probably have power steering? 302 - (dead)-the 302 is more common in the GT but an I-6 was also there 3 speed auto -this was optional, this or 3 spd. manual was it bucket seats -standard with GT option package 5 bolt sloted alum. mags -some of the sales ads show these as std. on GT's shaker hood -as Dennis said, non-functional scoop, Std. on GT's GT stripes -part of GT option package sport mirrors -part of GT option package Nice project. Good luck with it. Seth in N. Carolina redcometgt@aol.com
The Comet GT hood scoop was functional. Both of the 73 Comet GT's I've had, had the hole cut out in the hood, under the scoop. One had the 250 cu in, the other a 302 cu in. I still have the factory hood from the 250 car (the scoop is on my clone). The factory cut the hole very wierd though. I cut the hole, on my clone & it looks much better than factory.
I have seen Factory Comet GT hoods with the scoop removed ... the only holes were the ones for the studs on the scoop ....
Dan, I just looked at the GT hoods again. The yellow GT hood had the hole cut in it (not very good). The other one looks factory, they must have done a great job....fooled me....
I have never seen the hood cut "open" from the factory. I have a GT hood in my parts inventory. Original paint.....no hole.
I'll third that, it was not open from the factory. The scoop was even advertised as 'non-functional'. Seth
Hello and a big warm welcome you need it by the look of those snowy pics. Car looks like it can be saved no problem. Just whatever you do give it a good home(don't crush it) if you decide to not tackle the restoration. That car has plenty of potential. Comet GTs are somewhat rare. I have always wanted one myself but never found one I could either afford or was honestly salvagable. Good Luck with it need help just ask the www.maverick.to crew. We love to help and pictures of your progress would be awesome. Keep on cometing.......
