Haven't had a working odometer or speedometer since my v8 swap..

Figure while I have the cluster out doing the headlight switch I'll put a better condition cluster I already have in there. How would I make my odometer and speedometer work again? They worked before the engine swap.

Trying to know what I'm doing before I have it apart...

The cable connects from the tail housing of trans into the back of cluster, simple as that... When not working 99.9% of the time something is disconnected or the cable is broken... In rare cases the gear that fits in the transmission may be damaged or speedo is defective...

yep, if it stopped working when you did the swap, most likely the problem is with the cable, the driven gear on the cable or the drive gear in the transmission.

pull the cable out of the transmission. inspect the condition of the gear. if it looks good, try turning the gear and see or have some one watch the speedo to see if the needle jumps. try turning the gear both ways. if the speedo jumps then the drive gear in the trans is either stripped or has popped off its location on the out put shaft. you need to remove the tail shaft housing to fix that.

I had the same problem. Pulled the cable from transmission and found this. Luckily I had a spare with the correct tooth count to match my new rear end ratio.

I didn't change transmissions. Sounds like I probably just screwed something up during the swap. I'll check the cable on the tailhousing end before I pull the cluster. Thanks for the info guys!

Do new speedometers need a new cable? I'm changing to an aftermarket guage at somepoint... If I need a new cable, maybe I should just keep using my gps for speed until then.

Odometer would be nice until I put the float back on my gas guage though haha

the aftermarket speedos use a screw on speedo cable. the stock cable is a clip on.
you can slip the stock cable on and usually their is enough stiffness in the cable to keep it pressed on to the speedo. i had it like that on my car for 2 years with no problems.
