just put a brand new 302 engine in my 1973 comet, everthing runs great. BUT when i hit the gas the belts screetch bad, its like the fan belt or the alt belt cant keep up with the engine when the gas is punched. any thoughts?? the fan and alt are original thanks guys
Sounds like it's time for a new belt. Your belt(s) might be glazed from slipping. Tightening them will not solve the problem.
Make sure you have the correct width belt. If it is to narrow it will bottom out in the pulley. The belt should make it's contact with the pulley on the two sides of the belt.
Yes, make sure you have a new belt first and be sure it is plenty tight. If you can take your thumb and make the fan on the alternator slip it's either not tight enough or you may have a bad pulley. Take a close look at the alternator pulley. It should have a very nice "V" shape. I have seen these pulleys wear excessively over the years and will have more of a "U" shape. The belt will sit down too deep in the pulley and will certainly slip. Hopefully, it's just the belt.
